Is the new Metallica innovative? Vocal ANALYSIS and thoughts on "72 Seasons".

Published 2024-01-30
I've listened to a lot of Metallica since starting this channel, so have a lot of experience with the trajectory of James Hetfield's vocal journey. When they released their new album, I analyzed "Lux Aeterna" and was pleasantly surprised with their mature new sound. Now it's time to see why the Grammy's nominated "72 Seasons" and prime for my final thoughts video later this week!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Metallica performing "72 Seasons" for the first time.

You have to do Inamorata from this album. It's James' best vocal performance. Period.
  • @metalmark1214
The inspiration of 72 Seasons came out of a book James Hetfield was reading about childhood, basically, and sorting out childhood as an adult. And 72 seasons is basically the first 18 years of your life. It delves into the crucial formative years of our lives when the die is cast to determine who we become as adults. The song highlights how childhood traumas or negative experiences shape our adult selves.

I highly recommend Inamorata. It's a long one but it brings you on a journey, and showcases James' clean vocals as well

Room of Mirrors off 72 Seasons is my favourite. James emotion and lyrics are really vulnerable, and the guitar changes and new combined with old feel
  • @prodigalbrock
You need to watch james reacting to elton john calling james writing nothing else matters as one of thr best songs ever written and it bringing him to tears
  • James' voice has aged like fine wine. He has been amazing live for several years now. I saw them in 2022 and he was unbelievable.

Inamorata next. From the same album!
  • @stigpetersen9701
Inamorata and Rooms of Mirrors from the same album….bangers 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
  • You told us a veerrrryyyy long time ago that you were gonna do Unforgiven II and III. Still waiting! That whole trilogy is so good, each song very unique from one another yet retaining certain themes as well.

I think Hetfield’s vocals on this album are absolutely fantastic, it gives the songs such a great energy. The whole album is a great addition to Metallica’s discography and I think it represents the modern Metallica very well. Love it.

I know that some dislike the newer Metallica, but I actually enjoy it. Like any band, they changed over time, but I just like Metallica. New old, whatever.
  • @gianwinters
The star of the whole 72 seasons album is how James Hetfileld took time and expressed a variety of emotions and techniques across different songs.
  • @digibirder
This is mature people showing they still have the same character as when they were young. They just have a more "evolved" approach and understanding. It's really great to see that Metallica has got themselves to this next level. It brings a whole new perspective to rock/metal, that was born of youth. And of course Elizabeth helps us understand that. Great reaction!

THAT INTRO WAS BADASS!! I didnt know they had a new album out. Sounds like it should be the beginning of a Bond movie.
  • @harrr53
James uses his voice almost as percussion. To me that's his most distinctive ability. He always did it to some extent, but it really showed in Load (1996), which I wouldn't say is the band's best, but it's the one James Hetfield's voice really perfected this quality which punctuates the songs rhythmically.
  • @harmonic3350
The boys are kicking @zz still. Each are executing their classic riffs with new energy and precision. 🤟 "Cannot stop the Battery"
  • @jeffsharp4982
I encourage anyone to see them live! I did for the first time (twice) in 2023 and they are wonderful live!!
  • @LDC4th
I would absolutely ADORE a video of Metallica reacting to your reaction/evaluations of their music. I think they would really enjoy your commentary.

72 seasons album has been my favorite, it's definitely a slow grower for some fans but it hooked me right away. Shadows Follow and Screaming Suicide have been my jammers. But for reaction and analysis, Too Far Gone and Inamorata are excellent choices imo. But man, this album is worth a whole listen, I love Metallica.
