Will the Ford f-150 Lightning be your first electric vehicle? Then there are 3 things that you will need to know before you decide to make the step into EVs.

I recently took delivery of my very first electric Vehicle. And after putting 1000 miles on my EV I learned some key lessons about driving electric.

I now feel fully prepared for what life will be like owning a f150 lightning. So that's why this video was made. I wanted to simplify my findings into 3 things.

The ford lighting is going to be an amazing truck. However, there are a couple fears I have.

First, I break down winter driving range loss. This was something I was NOT ready for when I switched to EV.

Next, I look into road trips. We look into how to research local and nearby chargers. Finding a fast charger near your destinations is key.

Finally, we talk about technology. There are some things missing on the lightning that I feel like could ruin certain trims of the ford f150 lightning.

Charging at home is the true plus to having an EV. Get the NEMA 14-50 installed as Rob Autry is saying. Costs me about $900 for EVSE charging unit from OpenEVSE and an electrician to run the power to my parking area about 25 feet from house. I wake to a “full charge (85% by choice)” each morning. I got over range anxiety in my Mach-e pretty quickly. I have had zero issues with Electrify America chargers in my area.

Do you need a car or a truck? That should be your deciding factor not the hype behind the lightning. I'm looking forward to the people who can barely park a compact car to start driving full size trucks. I think I saw 60% of lightning pre-orders are going to be first time truck buyers or some crazy number like that

I had my parents install a NEMA 14-50 outlet in there garage so I could take my level 2 with me. Only cost about 250 bucks. Well worth it in case you need the juice.

I can't wait to see a video documenting a road trip in the Lightning. I'm waaaaay far back in line, so I won't be getting mine until after you early reservation holders will have had your trucks for a bit!

Watch out of spec motoring. He does road trips in all evs and looks at chargers. Seems to give you a good idea of how an actual road trip will go.

My first EV car was a 2015 VW e-golf, and you are right, I was getting about 62 miles out of a full-charge range of 83 miles back then. So, I was losing about 21 miles per charges, which is close to a 25% loss in those cold winter months.

I saw a video with a ford rep that said the range of the Platinum is 280 miles. Those mileage estimates of over 400 seem to be coming from vehicles that have been driven off of transports to events. The truck is calculating the long mileage due to the slow speeds the car has been operated at.

The 25% percent range loss due to cold weather varies use to location. In the in western Canada here 40% seems to be the average range loss but depending how cold it is which can get to -35 C. Rocky Mountain Tesla on YT has a great channel for northern climates like ours. Even with the range loss it didn’t effect his daily driving habits in town. Not sure how the heat pump will effect that range loss

Have you looked into certain Ford dealerships marking up previously reserved (at an already agreed to price) Mach-E and Lightning vehicles anywhere from $10 - 30k? Good luck with your reservation. Cheers.

You need either a NEMA 14-50 plug installed or buy and install the wall charger. I had my wall charger installed a couple weeks ago and only cost me $1,000 ($500 for the charger itself and $500 to install it in the garage). On the Lightning, I’m excited about it and have my reservation in but extremely concerned about some of the things I’m hearing some dealers are doing that will significantly increase the price tag ($5,000-$30,000 more than the estimated MSRP).

I had an f350 I bought new in 2018 the diesel fuel got to be to much. I sold it and bought a Toyota carolla. I know crazy switch. I sold my camper cuz I was moving but I miss having a truck. I feel like the lighting pro is a good middle ground for me for efficiency while still getting to have a truck. My biggest concern though is towing. If I tow a 6000 lb camper I am pretty worried I could lose up to 70% range. If that’s the case it won’t work for me. I guess time will tell.

💯 on the super charging of the lightning vs the tesla supercharging stations. I am concerned about the ability of super charging to get across the nation for anything other than a tesla right now, think like road-tripping kind of thing. I am a late reservation holder for the f150 pro+ (plus for extended range) so hopefully this is sorted sooner than later. I have seen the electrify america plugs but see alot of them either broken or not working which has me worried. 😬 It seems like there is not alot of maintenance going on to these stations. Also, side note, when u report a tesla supercharger station that is not working and/or broken, sometimes support will gift you charging miles. Sorta cool… it’s like checking the payphone/coke machine for change back in the day and to your delight…it has spare 🪙’s kind of feeling! Nice👍😂

HEY LARRY DID YOUR DEALER HEAR ANYTHING YET ON A ORDER DATE ?
  • @tide4113
I got my Model Y delivered last week. Thankfully I live in SoCal and there are a supercharger almost every corner. However, in case I get a F150 delivered it gonna be a whole different game.
  • You do make fantastic points Larry! Level 2 and 3 charging stations nearby surely will reduce the anxiety. Sad that Tesla won't allow (at least for now) other EV's to utilize their infrastructure.
  • @iskyfly7
What do you think about price markup? Some dealers are going up from $10,000 to $30,000.
  • @arlieriefer9612
The range of every E Vehicle make my 400 + miles to a tank of gas make my 05 Caddy look great if I every take a trip. Every vehicle I have goes over 400 miles to a tank 9( gas and I can top them off! No Worries!

Color choice. Ordering platinum as soon as order bank opens. Narrowed down to caramelized grey, antimatter blue or ice blue. Don’t want white. What would look best with the two tone platinum interior?

Oops, you weren't charging at 50KW (DC), you were charging at Level 2 (AC) like you would be at home on 240V. You would need a CHADEMO or CCS adapter that are not sold by Tesla in the US in order to charge at 50KW. You were probably using the J-1772 adapter which is Level 2 (AC) charging only. At 50KW you would still be charging at more than 100 miles per hour. (50,000W ÷ 400WH/mi = 125 mi/hr) (or divide your 150KW rate by 3) 50KW still isn't great, 150KW is still 3x better, but it's not as dire as you thought.
