The Secret Diary Of The Holocaust tells the extraordinary tale of a 14-year-old Polish girl, Rutka Laskier, who was murdered at Auschwitz in 1943.

In 2005, the school notebook in which Rutka recorded her last months in the ghetto of Bedzin was made public, six decades after she hid it under the floorboards of her home there. Rutka was immediately dubbed the 'Polish Anne Frank'.

In her diary, Rutka wrote about her life in the ghetto in 1943, detailing not just the Nazi atrocities, physical hardship and hunger, but also how she was developing as a young woman. She also tells how she made a daring escape from one of the early 'aktions', Nazi round-ups of Jews for transportation.

The documentary will unravel Rutka's story through the eyes of her half-sister, Israeli academic Zahava Scherz, on a journey to Poland in search of the sister she never knew.

  • Very important story and you are ruining it with the background music drowning out the dialogue

What I found to be heartbreaking. Imagine being a 14 year old girl (or boy). You're not sick with cancer or any other deadly illness or sickness. Yet you know, you are going to die. She wrote that before hiding her diary. I can't imagine being 14 and knowing, not thinking, but knowing, I was going to die.

"If only I could say, it's over, you die only once. But I can't, because despite all these atrocities, I want to live, and wait for the following day." ~Rut "Rutka" Laskier (12 June 1929 – 5 August 1943)
My heart breaks for you, sweet child. I'm so sorry. RIP
  • The background music is so loud CANT HEAR most important dialogue! TERRIBLE EDITING
  • The friend that retrieved and held onto the diary for decades is the friend in life we all want. She was so sweet, it made me cry.

Such a well done documentary, but unfortunately the music was so loud that whenever she was reading her diary it was nearly impossible to understand her words, which was the most important part of the story 😢
  • @Jen_K
WHY is the irrelevant music more important to this video editor to be heard, than this very important story?!
  • I would love to actually be able to hear the words this beautiful young lady wrote. I didn't sit down to watch this only to hear the very loud music. So disappointing.

What a gifted writer....murdered at the hands of demons...what stories she could've written...but she was published...she reached out from the grave and lives on ... RIP Rutka

Yes, there is an issue with the sound, but I persevered and still found this documentary a powerful thought provoking account of a hideous period in European history.

The little girl that wrote the diary had beautiful handwriting! Amazing how well preserved it is!

The poignancy of Rutka‘a diary is matched by her sister’s eloquence and sensitivity in sharing this with us. Thank you.
  • @wendyfaery8046
Thank you Rutka for hiding your diary and to your friend for keeping it so safe. She was so smart and determined. It shows in what person how much the world lost!!! What would she have done with her life??? What would her future generations??? So much taken by hate!!! I am so glad she named her daughter after her sister to keep her memory alive. I live in a small town in Vermont, USA nd we have a survivor that lived here and she set up teaching and spoke when she was alive at school. I had taught my daughter but when she heard it in person it is so much more powerful

Rutka could be anyone's child. It's horrendous what happened to the Jews because one man hated them.
  • I have such a deep passionate respect for anyone who was in the holocaust. It has such a deep place in my heart. I was just a teen ager when i first read The Diary of Anne Frank .Since then i have absorbed everything about the holocaust . Thank you for this presentation.

Don't let future generations forget what these poor people went through because we as a society can't allow this to happen again!!! As hard as it is to let people know how horrible things were they need to never forget!!!
  • @ickeyViki
