This is the most important Toyota in decades.

It's the new Toyota bZ4X electric SUV, a rival to the all-conquering Tesla Model Y EV among plenty of other great plug-in family car options.

It shares plenty with the Subaru Solterra, and is a great alternative to a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. But is it a good first effort for an Australian Toyota customer?

In this review, I'll cover all the stuff you need to know, like pricing and specs, powertrain details, charging and recharging, energy consumption and of course, how it drives.

I even went off road in it::

And trust me, you're going to want to watch til the end to see some of the ownership considerations, too.

Checked the price $71,000 to $80,000 from the Toyota web page sorry no deal.
  • @SteveJ0hnson
Did Toyota use a random character generator to come up with that name? Did a cat run across somebody's keyboard?
  • @acde9355
This car makes the upcoming Volkswagen ID.4, which is $77k but offers 556km of range, more justified.

just starting watching, and only realised you're a one man crew...well done. If you're ever in Melbourne and need a helper, let me know.

2:28 "and maintenance" What maintenance is there for the first 3 years? Tires are covered as a separate statement. So, what? Windshield washer fluid?
  • @andrew6526
All Toyotas are way overpriced, their taking the piss out of Australian's.

The BZX4 is comparable to an Atto 3 not a Model Y. Even compared to the Atto it has less luggage space, less head room (but costs $15k more). Common sense would tell anyone to buy the Atto in preference.
  • As an ex Australian Toyota interior fabric specialist who developed the last seat covering and headliner for the last Camry I also don’t like the darker side headliners used as it just doesn’t provide the look of space which I’m sure you agree based upon your previous videos. I’m also not a fan of the “white/cream” Pleather. Just so difficult to keep clean especially with little one or people wearing new denim on hot days.
  • Yeah - I’ve always got a spare $70 K lying around! And no rear wiper and spare tyre is got to be the kicker 😮
  • @jessexi
stuck in the middle is when you wanna keep RAV4 competitive but also wanna compete in ev market

NEDC range is also known as Not Even Dam Close.

Isn’t this the one that wheels come off while driving? Hope toyota fix it.

We have 2 bz4x in our businessfleet. Cost in the Netherlands, 48k. Euro. It is actually a very nice car to drive, range is good as well as charging. This car is far better than the press wants you to believe

The cost of EV's in Australia will never let them be a popular choice... something small 1/2 this price for a second car city run around would be great or stick with a practical hybrid system.

I own a Forester. Make one with a battery that will go 450 to 500km's on a charge with a decent recharge speed. Add a fullsize spare wheel at 18 inches. A usable Frunk and the ability to go power back to the grid and its a winner.
  • Can someone please tell me. Is this and the subaru, the same car albeit with slightly different cosmetics? Do they run down the same production line? Many journalists have been saying that they share a platform, but I think this is a real stretch. The 86 and brz, are actually the same car, barring some minor cosmetics.
