The nazis were walking past/through the Arc de triomphe as a slap in the face toward the French. The monument was built for Napoleon victories over german states.

0:36 all of them were middle aged men crying. Most likely they were the teenage soldiers in world war 1. They sacrificed their youth and watch their friends die just to see their country fall in a month 2 decades later

hitler must have been so high on power when france surrendered, probably can only be described as a otherworldly feeling

The man at 0:36 is one of the most famous people ever, I’ve seen him in movies, video games and documentaries.

The crying french man image is so powerful.

The Frenchman in the opening scene was likely a WWI veteran dismayed that only 22 years after the Allies victory over Germany, Nazi Germany is marching in conquest all over France.
  • So striking seeing a man crying for his country's fate. It's an image that has always haunted me.

At 0:36 The Weeping Frenchman is a relatively famous Life magazine photograph.
  • Wait, but they can’t do that! What about the Treaty of Versailles!?!?

My grandmother was 8 years old when my country, Slovenia, was occupied by the Germans. The eldest brother, Dimika, was kidnapped and sent to forced labor in Germany, from which he never returned. Even today, Ljubljana's elders don't talk much about the war.

I can't imagine how did the french should felt in that moment when one of the most powerfull countries in europe surrenders
  • French tanks have 4 velocities in reverse and 1 for going front, in case the enemy comes from behind...

France is the country that has abandoned its capital without fighting. Certainly, the external beauty of Paris was ultimately preserved. However, that pride and nobility were lost forever. The disgrace of "Open City" will never be disappeared. Paris used to be truly beautiful…

Peoples applause not the german army but the fact that that war ended. The armistice.
  • 0:56 I don't know what made hitler laugh, but it had to be something very funny, while the French were crying lol
