Safe In Your Head - Samuel Pearce-Davies

Published 2016-05-27
An experimental sacred choral piece for a university assessment.

Concept:
Different sacred spaces and related music carry an implication of safety or security. Traditionally, this can relate to the concept of a ‘parish’, where all who fell within earshot of the church bell were designated as being under the church’s protection. More generally though, this implied safety is an intangible, almost imaginary thing, as different faiths often promise protection for the soul after death - a deeper, ethereal sort of security. It could be said that the safety offered by different faiths and belief systems is at least partly ‘in your head’. This idea led me to consider the ‘head’ itself, or rather each individual’s own personal ‘headspace’. This might be seen as the most sacred space of all, as it is the one place we have entirely to ourselves that cannot be intruded upon in the physical sense.

Thanks to Andrea Rushton and members of the AMATA Vocal Ensemble for providing their voices for the buddhist chant section, and to Chris Symons for the female vocals of "In Paradisum".
