From there, the legendary soul singer explains why she left The Sequence to pursue a solo career as a singer. She then talks about her journey as a young artist, touring with Lenny Kravitz and working with Prince. Moving along, she details her first love as an artist which was acting. As the discussion continues, she mentions the fact that The Sequence was often overlooked for their contributions as songwriters to music such as "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars. She also breaks down why her group didn't get enough acknowledgment for inspiring "Keep Ya Heads Ringing" by Dr. Dre. Lastly, Angie gives a nod to Missy Elliot for mentioning The Sequence during her "Hollywood Walk of Fame" speech back in 2021.

This is why Prince was so uptight about his music because these record companies, record executives, and these artists have no problems stealing and sampling other people's work without getting permission or even paying them.
  • Hard to believe but this lady has been in the industry for nearly 40 to 50 years! And she is still standing??? She is still relevant??? True legend!

Wow—I didn’t know this. So The Sequence is really the “Hidden Figures” of hip hop. Give them the recognition they’re due!!

Angie Stone was "Angie B" on the First Female Rap Group titled "The Sequence" along with group members "Blondie" and " Cheryl The Pearl" back in 1979. I still have all their vinyl and was lucky to get their music on CD. Angie Stone was also part of another group with two men called "Vertical Hold" back in 1993. The cut "Seems You're Much Too Busy" was the known cut. I also have their 2 CDs. And of course we all know her solo music up to this day. I have much respect for Angie Stone for being a survivor in the crazy music business for over 40 years.
  • ANGIE IS A REAL LEGEND AND DESERVES TO GET HER FLOWERS RIGHT NOW!!! SHE IS AWESOME!!!

"Funk you up" is a House Party Classic for those of you who never heard Funk you up by Sequence that joint is slammin 💯
  • Angie is the true queen of “neo-soul” as opposed to Erykah Badu. Had it not been for Angie’s support, D’Angelo would have been incapable of completing his debut project. She’s my generation’s Gladys Knight and Mavis Staples and doesn’t receive the accolades she so rightly deserve. I admire her to pieces. 🖤🎼🖤
  • Shout out to Angie stone. Keep telling your story. The people need to know.
  • The blatant disrespect! The industry is so foul! Salute to Angie Stone. Funk You Up by Sequence was one of the first 12 inch records that I bought.

  • Mahogany Soul is one of the top 10 best albums. Ever. Period. It’s one of those “no skips” album that don’t even exist anymore. She’s such a pure artist. Love you Angie!
