At this point it seems like you are gonna do the whole ultra series, I can't wait to see which one you do next
  • Taro tends to get a bad rap for being a silly and child-friendly show, but upon watching it it really surprised me. The quality of the storytelling and special effects are as high as ever, and the focus on stories meant to appeal to children mean that a lot of the episodes feel whismical or even fairy-tale esque in nature. Even the extremely outlandish episodes have some kind of moral for the kids at home to take away from. It's the rare show that can feel grounded in one moment, but feel like a complete fever dream the next. My favourite episodes are the Ultra Brothers episodes, you really get to feel the familial bond between them and how much the Brothers truly are for each other, how they appear to help Taro when the stakes are at their highest. It's easy to see why Taro specifically is so beloved in Japan, the children who grew up watching it back im the day are probably the adults now looking back on it with fondness. Looking forward to the Leo video.

Taro is the most brutally loud Ultra-series (style-wise). I am also deeply in love with 1971's "Return of Ultraman" (Ultraman Jack), but Taro is my favorite series. Seven is great too. those early shows are all fun and creative.
  • My favorite episodes are the ones where the Ultra Brothers fight against Alien Temperor. It was great seeing every past human form of the Ultra Brothers And I love the Alien Temperor fight too
  • It kind of makes Ultraman Cosmos the Heisei version of Taro. Cosmos is called the Warrior of Kindness. He shows compassion to misguided or misunderstood monsters, yet only resorts to his other, more powerful forms if a peaceful solution is not available.
  • One of the memorable episodes for me was when Taro was defeated by Birdon, and Zoffy came to take his place to protect Earth. However, when he faced the bird monster, he too got pawned really hard. There was a scene when Birdon breathed fire, Zoffy's head caught fire and you can feel the horror that Zoffy felt when that happened with the score and his trembling. Well, I've heard a rumor that the part where Zoffy's head caught on fire was entirely accidental and Zoffy panicking was entirely the suit actor genuinely panicking. But the camera was rolling, so the Birdon suit actor improvised by throwing Zoffy into the pond of water nearby. idk if the rumor was true but this little trivia rumor made an already memorable scene the more unforgettable.
  • Ultraman Taro, a show that manages to make me both laugh and cry throughout the entire show.
  • It's funny. This video showed up in my subscriptions right after I finished rewatching my favorite episode of this series (Episode 48). This video was very good and did this show justice. Ultraman Taro is one of my favorite Ultraman shows because of how it unapologetically embraces the silliness while still providing good writing and action.

I never remembered Taro as being goofy. I always remembered it as being next-gen/new. Like I would have trouble watching the older Ultra series just because the effects and production are so much more modern in Taro.
  • Great to see another Ultra series retrospective. I personally love these in-depth analyses of the shows. I hope that this series continues as, imo, each Ultra show has something unique to offer. Not all of them stick the landing, but they still bring their own charm to the table.
  • @toku-punk
blunova uplouds a ultra video everyone OMG THE GOAT IS BACK LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
  • "Out of context this stuff would be wild" Ah yes, because 70s toku is famously very tame in the right context
  • Next one is gonna be good. The most edgy and depressing ultra show, with the most shocking episode of the franchise, and the lowest ratings of the franchise (one ep was watched by less than 10 people). Good stuff.
  • Great review man! I had no idea that an Ultraman would also fight a Gamera look alike. Of course Jirass was a actual Goji costume though haha keep up the great work man!
  • 0:20 Unless your name is Kotaro Kigashi then you're chance of being an Ultra is like Waluigi's chance of getting in the Smash Bros roster.
  • One of my favorite series of the Ultra universe. Thanks for an honest and thoughtful review as usual. You really do some great work in your analysis of these shows!
  • Been looking forward to this for a while. Real good video, can't wait for one on Ultraman Leo!
  • Ultraman Taro has the distinction of being the only series for which the Ultra's human host is never seen again after the series. They wanted him in Ultraman Mebius but he wasn't available when it came time to film the Taro episode so of all the Showa Ultras only Taro appears in Mebius without his human form. Even Ace's male host has a brief encounter with Ace's former female host. Ace was adopted by Taro's parents Father and Mother of Ultra so they consider each other brothers. And Ultraman and Jack apparently biological brothers. Otherwise the Ultra Brothers are brothers in arms not literal brothers. And in Ultraman Mebius, its said that its the humans of Earth who called them the Ultra Brothers in the first place, in fact the name Ultraman comes from humans, so we don't actually know the first giant hero's true name. In Ultraman Mebius they have files on all Showa Ultramans, earth teams and the monsters. Apparently missing is the fact that the Ultras take on human form because everyone is shocked to find out one of their team is really Ultraman Mebius.
