I measure and compare the muzzle velocities of two different handloads in four 44 Magnum revolvers with varying barrel lengths.

Those are some very nice 44's. I am late to the revolver game but looking forward to enjoying them as much as I do my semi auto pistols. Thanks for the video.
  • Nice, nice collection. Great data. Good stuff. Many thanks. I only have a 6" 629 now. But over tge yearsI have owned almost every barrel length S&W had offered in 29/629 from 3" up to the 10 5/8" silhouette. Subscribing to keep up with these beauties.

Beautiful revolvers, and you are a mighty fine shot sir.
  • Great info! IMR4227 is a great powder for the 44 Magnum. I started out using a Lee loader in 1972. The dipper gave 23.0 grains of IMR4227 so I tried that load in my 4 inch 29-2. Very accurate with the Keith 429421 with little leading. Many years later when I got a chrono it showed 1225 fps from a 4 inch. In a 24" Marlin 1984 Cowboy it went 1700 fps. I got lucky with the Cowboy as it feeds Elmer's bullet perfectly. I cant make it jam. This rifle was made in 2000 and is factory set for 1.710 COL. Other SWCs simply wont feed.
  • O melhor vídeo demonstrativo de desempenho do calibre 44 e seus modelos. Parabéns. trabalho excepcional!!!

Incredible how consistent you were able to make your loads !! Ricky from IBM

Wow, I was quite surprised to see that three of those four revolvers are pre-lock Smith & Wessons. Awesome guns, I really want to get a .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver without that stupid ass internal lock but the prices are sky high as one would imagine. I found one for a decent price but it has a 4 inch barrel, which is why I was looking for this kind of video. Thanks for the info

I reload and have been using Titegroup powder. Meters really well. I'm using it in 380, 9mm and 45. I'll soon be usinvg some in my 44 Mag rounds.
  • No surprises here; about what I'd expect. I am impressed with your steady hold and excellent marksmanship. I think you are right about the faster powder being expended in the 6.5" barrel, and longer barrels offer no velocity advantage. The longer barrels will be able to take advantage of the slower powders like H-110, 4227, and SR 4759, and AA - 5744. Nice collection of Smiths!
  • Do you handgun hunt? I have some years ago. But not in recent years to speak of. I always carry a handgun when hunting and often it is the 44 magnum. Thank you.

Clever channel name. Reminds me of Hickock45. 😇 Good demonstration of burning rate. However I suspect that something is up with the 8" barrel gun. Velocity should continue increasing significantly up to carbine length. Perhaps chamber dimensions or cylinder gap is in play.

If you had a Dan Wesson 44 revolver you could have 2.5”, 4”,6”,8” and 10” barrels with one gun, no lock, and a stronger frame

Interesting how the 8" had about the same as the 6 1/2. Something is up with that barrel twist I'm thinking.
