Today’s nuclear arsenals are much more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Experts are concerned that a modern nuclear war will trigger the feared “nuclear winter”, which could kill 5 billion of the world’s population. Asia First’s Julie Yoo explores the powerful nuclear bombs of today, and atmospheric professor Owen Brian Toon explains the catastrophic effects a nuclear winter can bring.

I love how leaders of the world talk about using nuclear bombs when they all have bunkers to hide and survive in. Meanwhile, the rest of us have to deal with the consequences of such destruction.

I just had a son. It sucks to think about having brought him in a world where this type of future is highly likely…

  • My blood ran cold. Please World Leaders , do everything to your power to prevent such scenarios.

Imagine going back in time 5 years and being able to meet yourself and share what the future will bring? Your 2017 self would be horrified and scared beyond words. We are here now, but because it’s gradual, many people are numb to it and aren’t nearly as afraid as they should be. 😢

I never heard of CNA news. They did an amazing job.
  • I appreciate the willingness to talk and discuss difficult situations. It's not common that we see that anymore these days and I find it better if we talk about things rather than not.. I really don't want the day where we miss use this beneficial tool, as a horrific weapon.. After seeing videos that taught me just how much we have improved our understanding and capabilities of nuclear energy options and all sorts of different types of methods that are so much safer. I realized that even tho we had a traumatic past, and sadly weapons are thought of if you mention nuclear energy. Regardless, I'm a big supporter of wanting to rebuild our future electrical grid with modern advanced nuclear energy options because the more you learn, the more you realize that back when we were no where ready to be operating things, the reactor designs, the fuel sources, the engineering, the terrible electronics technology.. and the complete lack of understanding of safety measures and radiation... It's honestly really difficult because I know so many people are traumatized from nuclear energy due to our past but really I strongly believe we will heal and do so much better if we can ever give it a chance again. ~{This is why we need to invest in modern advanced nuclear energy options. Small form reactors, LFTRs, Thorium Reactors, liquid reactors, with modern technology, engineering, material science, safety measures understandings and designs, computer technology, robotics, It will really allow any nation to be pretty much be energy independent. Less reliant on fossil fuels. They'll have efficient, stable electrical grids and the rest of the grid could experiment with alternative power sources, etc. We need to heal from the trauma of our past and see that it came solely from Us not understanding what we were doing, not have advanced enough technology, material science, engineering, safety measures, understanding of how to go about everything, etc. This source of energy will greatly help the world improve towards the future and lowering emissions more than anything else could while having a very stable electrical grid system. Currently we have alternative energy options but the majority of our grid is powered off of fossil fuels and emission producing sources of energy. We will be so much better going forward commiting to modern advanced nuclear energy options.}~

Prof. Owen Brian Toon very clearly sets out just how much of a total disaster nuclear war would be for all of mankind.
  • Impressive graphics and coverage by CNA. There must be an enthusiast working there.
  • Good job Singapore. Your graphics and voice over summed it up nicely.

Professor Toon was a very good teacher, helping me save the world from catastrophe. That’s how important reliable information is and why democracy helps spread important information.
  • Great graphics. The Tsar Bomba was downgraded by 50% after it was constructed. The scientists behind it told the govt they weren't sure of what would happen from its effect so they decided to reduce its power to be on the safer side.

Dude left them speechless for a couple seconds 😳
  • On a positive note; the graphics and presentation on this channel is outstanding.
  • @cc-hw8by
US has 5,248 nukes in total and it only takes 1 to destroy a city. That doesn't count several other weapons that will definitely ruin your day.
  • You know this is serious staff that the professor is saying when the two interviewers were left speechless for several seconds before regaining their composure to end the interview.
  • @JPurontong
When you see a mushroom blast don’t run away from it but run toward the blast, it’ll be quicker or you won’t feel a thing.
  • @Zimbabwe.
CNA Good graphics and well documented information with the lady presenter welldone i have subscribed, good work
  • There will, sooner or later, be a nuclear exchange. The results are too terrible to contemplate. As I think Khrushchev said about such a scenario: “The living will envy the dead.”
