What's it like to feel like a foreigner in a country you were born and raised in? Aju was born in Japan. Her father is from the Bahama's and her mother is from Aomori, Japan. She was born and raised in Japan, but still feels like she doesn't fit in. Despite being more fluent in Japanese than English, it's hard for Japanese people to accept her as a friend.

I was born in Chiba and I’m Latino Japanese my mom and dad moved me and my sister to Miami Florida to get us away from the constant bullying in japan. Greatest decision ever thanks mom

She should’ve started speaking to him back in Japanese. He would’ve been flabbergasted

I'm Japanese & African American. I'm 73yo, seems nothing has changed. I've been told that I was not Japanese, that my name is made up trying to be African (by a white person). My Japanese ancestors told my father that he should not have children with my mother because I would turn out funny looking. I was not able to participate in a private industry program because I was light skin with 'good' hair. Its beautiful and rough being mixed. Beautiful because we are of more than one culture and innate 'racial/tribal' traits/memories. Claim what you are, ignore and know that people who try and impose their opinions on you about who/what you are, are in fact, rude, ignorant and need to be ignored.

Which is funny because in Japanese anime the characters always look everything but oriental..
  • The fact that she still wasn’t even disrespectful in response to him…says a lot about her character. ❤

At the same time she's facing racism for being half-Black, Japanese people are loving hip hop music, emulating Black American culture, and getting their hair permed into afros. That country loves Black culture but not Black people just like South Korea.
  • I was born in Japan, but raised in the United States. I went from elementary through high school and never saw another Asian face. I felt the prejudice and discrimination and ended up fighting a lot!!! Joined the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era and gravitated toward hanging with mostly the blacks. During my military career I was fortunate to live in Japan for about ten years. I soon realized that the majority of Japanese are very prejudiced, but they won’t admit it and in fact they get very angry if you mention it. They are unfortunately a pure blood thinking society and discourage any mixing. In the United States, I often felt the racism, but to be honest I think it’s worse in Japan. Even though I am pure blooded Japanese, I was never truly accepted in Japan. I married a Filipina and I’m glad I raised my family in the United States. It would have been hell in Japan!!! Please don’t get me wrong, I loved Japan, their culture and their people. It’s just I feel more at home here in the United States… (:

Why is it that the least racist countries are seen as the most racist, yet the actual most racist countries are never even considered to be racist??
  • "you lack discipline" is a good yet underused response to counter insult

I love being hapa! No one is ever going to bitter our sweetness. She's a tough, sweet cookie, and I love her for it. ❤
  • Wow the people in the comments who are accusing her of being negative and hostile because she has tattoos need to think outside of the box. Yes I know it goes against cultural norms however, why would she want to confirm to a society that refuses to accept her? Lets be real, even if she didn't have tattoos they would still treat her the same
  • As a indian, Italian, Guyanese, Mongolian, Solomon Island blooded lady...adopted by middle class Caucasians in the uk..with multi racial brothers and sister.... the amount of prejudice, racism, ignorance, judgement I have received in life has astounded me...still does... I have been so ill because of this struggle... to the point I live a life of solitude.
  • My friend always tells me “did you know in Japan …” as if it’s perfection finally I can shut him up
  • @AlienVisitor777
It shows what a beautiful soul she has because even her comeback wasn't hostile
  • I'm 100% sure if she was mixed with Japanese and white, they'd value her like a newly disclosed national treasure.

Older Japanese automatically believe that visible tattoos especially neck face or hands are taboo and a mark of the criminal underclass - if I was trying to live in Japan I’d have them removed or I’d just go to the US. I never got any because I intended to live in rural Central Japan. I already suffer from some harsh treatment because some shop owners or bus drivers etc think I’m a Brazilian (i’m actually German-American and a little French-Cherokee giving me somewhat tan skin). At times when travelling in rural areas I took to wearing American or Canadian flag or UCLA shirts sometimes to mark me as a North American.
