Albert Hammond Jr said something similar about joining the Strokes. Like he wasn't a particularly skilled guitarist but they picked him for the band because he could downstroke straight 8ths. Harder than it sounds.

This is a classic video. A lot of people don't understand this about The Ramones in my experience, they don't understand the downstroke thing. It makes a big difference.
