A wonderful hike in Val d'Ayas - (ITALY)

Published 2021-01-05
Hello, my friends! If you want to like, share or subscribe, I'll be very happy!
In this video I am pleased to take you with me for a hike in the Valle d'Aosta Region and more precisely in its northeastern part, the so-called Val d'Ayas.
This wide, verdant and sunny valley is spectacularly positioned at the foot of the Monte Rosa mountain range (4,600 meters), the second highest mountain range in the Alps.
It is crossed by the tumultuous Evancon torrent, a tributary of the Dora Baltea river and presents truly breathtaking landscapes with its perennial glaciers that counterbalance the rugged rocky walls that slope down into wide and wooded slopes and pastures.
A natural spectacle of rare beauty.
Here there are also some of the most beautiful and important ski slopes in the region.
During the spring and summer season, however, this Valley is transformed into a real open-air gym, a paradise for hikers and cyclists.
This valley has very ancient origins and played a fundamental role of great historical importance for having been a very important trade route to the Po Valley.
For a long time it was dominated by the noble family of the Challand family, to whom we owe the construction of numerous castles and fortresses in the region, many of which can be visited, such as the Fenis Castle and others of which you will see videos.
This Valley is also known for having had in the year 1000 AD the migration of the Walser populations, of Alemannic origin who for centuries have lived a sort of voluntary isolation, keeping intact customs, traditions, language and religion, and then arrive over time to a total integration with the valley population.
During the excursion you can admire a large plateau, the Pian di Verra Inferiore (2,053 meters) located right on the slopes of the Rosa mountain range and you can admire the tumultuousness of the Evancon stream that descends from the perennial glacier.
Since this was my first real hike in the high mountains, I didn't feel like going further to get to Lago Blu, (another artificial lake called the Blue Lake at the foot of the Matterhorn) a little further away.
I then regretted it, but in fact the descent, rather than the ascent, worried me a little. I plan to go back and not miss the beauty of this small lake nestled in the mountains !!
Almost at the end of the video, you can admire the splendid and characteristic village of Saint-Jacques des Allemands, which closes the Val d'Ayas and from which many of the excursions in this area depart.
It is a village of ancient origins, with the precious Church of Saint-Jacques, whose first site dates back to 1200.
In 1500 Pope Alexander VI ordered its extension with the addition of numerous precious frescoes, many of which were lost due to the numerous floods.
Saint-Jacques was the seat of the first Walser colony and the characteristic dwellings called "rascard" which are also found in other parts of the Aosta Valley, where these settlements have been, belong to this population.
The rascards are usually on two floors and have that particular "mushroom" shape due to the fact that they rest on supports of wood and stone, with the ground floor separated from the first floor to avoid humidity.
On the ground floor there was the stable and on the upper floor the real house and the cereal deposit.
Now these houses are obviously renovated, but they have kept the same architectural characteristics.
The roof has a skeleton made up of tree trunks covered with stones called "lose", typical of the territory.
Characteristic of this area are also the sabot, the wooden clogs, one different from the other, handmade with the woods of the area, by skilled local artisans.
As always in Italy, also in Val d'Ayas you can enjoy unique gastronomic specialties, especially based on the best known and renowned local cheese: fontina! A real treat!
I hope you enjoy my video, dear friends!
