For nearly two weeks, Ukrainian forces have been seizing and occupying Russian territory in the Kursk region.

It marks the first time since World War Two that a foreign army has been fighting inside Russia – and for many Russian people, it is cause for alarm.

Repeating the official messaging of the state media, some Russians call for “peace on Russia’s terms”, while others expressed hope that Moscow and Kyiv will sit down at the negotiating table and work out a way to end the conflict.

But, while the Kremlin is still calling what its troops are doing in Ukraine a “special military operation”, ordinary Russians use one simple word to describe all of this: "war".

  • Lady “why is this happening with us?” WOW, she really doesn’t know. Don’t take the free press for granted.

"As long as it doesn't affect me" is a common refrain from Russians.
  • @kalatapie
This reminds me of videos from North Korea where people can only ever repeat: "i am convinced we are doing better than them, we are winning" when they are standing in a building with no access to electricity.
  • If you invade a sovereign country, the invaded country may fight back. What a concept!
  • 0:36 "I am not a political person." - This seems like a common refrain among Russians. Six seconds later she asks, "Why is this happening to us?" The answer is because you and millions of your countrymen chose not to be political.

If someone asked Germans in late 1944, they would get the same answers... "we are lucky to have our Fuhrer, we believe in our soldiers, we want peace", same story.
  • I am from a country that was a Soviet Union satellite and we were hearing about peace and peace again from Moscow during the Cold War all the time when I was a child. In the end, who started this war were the Russians and their imperialistic president and also dictator.
  • Started the war and now whining 🤦‍♂️ There are videos from Kursk border region of people cheering russian military columns going into Ukraine back in 2022. They wanted it. They got it
  • These people are completely oblivious. What comes around goes around.
  • It is quite stupid to ask such question, if wrong answer is a few years in jail….

Really proud for people who signed Molotov-Ribbentrop act… The only reason Russia fought the real Nazis is because they were betrayed by them. The west did not forget what you did to Poland.
  • @Irevoltnow
Funny how only thing russians seem to remember from WW2 is fighting against germans. Conveniently forgetting what they did in Poland, Baltic countries and Finland.

“We’re so lucky to have Putin.” “What do you like about him?” Long pause, followed by a pre-canned response she probably got from state owned media. Propaganda is a helluva drug.

Lady “why is this happening with us?” Why tf do you think?
  • @bofengmebali9537
She should protest against Putin who started all this problem.
