During it's long development time, quite a few Subnautica features were scrapped or straight up removed from the game! With Subnautica 2 (or 3) around the corner, let's take a look at which of them could make a comeback and be implemented in new ways in the next Subnautica game! From a terraforming revival, to an in-depth submarine customization system and a expanded science tools and leviathan analysis gameplay, anything is possible in Subnautica 2!

About Subnautica:

Subnautica is an open world survival game in development by Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
Subnautica allows the player to explore an aquatic alien planet by scuba diving and traveling it, while collecting resources and food to survive. It was released on Steam Early Access on December 16, 2014.
The Xbox release was in August 2016.
The player controls in first-person view the lone survivor of a crashed ship on an aquatic planet.

The main objective of the player is to explore the open world environment and survive the dangers of the planet, while also continuing the story.

Subnautica allows the player to collect resources, construct tools, bases, and submersibles, and interact with the planet's wildlife.
Players must keep themselves adequately hydrated and fed, and must also maintain their oxygen supply while traversing underwater.
They discover remnants of the Precursors, an ancient alien species, that used to live on the planet, massive structures and receive mysterious signals by a strange entity. The development team opted to use the Unity engine rather than Spark, the engine used for the company's previous game, Natural Selection 2.
Subnautica producer Hugh Jeremy justified this decision because of the different demands that the game places on the engine, and "because [the team] does not include people working on Spark, it's not appropriate for Subnautica to use Spark.
By using Unity for Subnautica, Spark can continue to develop in certain directions, while Subnautica develops in others.
To use Spark for Subnautica would be to try and square peg a round hole."

Subnautica was released on Steam Early Access on December 16, 2014.
Subnautica was originally planned to be released on Xbox One on April 1, 2016, but was ultimately delayed by another month.

The next game in the Subnautica universe was announced in early 2022, expected to launch in early access about a year later.

  • the only thing i hope wont happen is terraforming cause i feel like it would just be too goofy and weird for it to feel natural and realistic
  • I would love a feature where the onboard submarine AI lines could be controlled by AI, kind of like chat GPT. You could ask questions in a terminal or over voice chat to have like a vocal assistant about things like in game time, and facts about already scanned creatures. You could even ask the AI to come up with jokes ( with a filter of course )

Tech to control currents would be in line with the stasis rifle or an EMP - nonlethal but debilitating weapons you could use on leviathans.
Also, something akin to the terraformer and the egg analyzer/gene modification is in No Man's Sky now, ironically.
  • @EmeraldVA
What I would love to see is official VR support. Subnautica 1 kinda had it but it needed mods to make it functional.
  • @voidzone14
You could use the sea currents to make highways underwater to move superfast and possibly safely
  • Loading camera drones and beacons into the cyclops decoy bay would’ve been cool in sub1
  • The custom submarine is such a cool idea, it could even have it’s own thing in the mobile vehicle fabricator. It would also be so cool to see players not only express themselves through their submarines, but also create their own submarine that suits their own stile of playing, and I think it would be so cool to see how some people would design their sub!
  • @cryolitegem
I feel like a weaker version of the terraformer could be good, as an upgrade to the habitat builder. It would make it where, as long as most of the structure was placed in open water, the edges would dig out the terrain to make space, and the terrain would come back should e structure be deconstructed.
Also, I really like the idea of research bases. In both Subnautica and Below Zero, I like to make a lot of mini bases I called outposts. They were simple, usually only having an appropriate power source and a scanner room, but I loved being able to go to these and always know what was in the area. I would love also love there to be a new base component that was like the scanner room, but exclusively scanned for things you hadn’t scanned yet for the PDA entry. It would make finding those random bits of flora much easier.
  • @fast-toast
I think a more sandboxy feeling game would be cool. Amagine if it was more about researching and going deeper into the ocean than to achieve a clear goal.
  • @MonkeMan74
Reapers are terrifying enough we don't need a reaper the size of the aurora .
  • Imagine if you could alter the ecosystem, like if you wiped out all of a prey, the predator would adapt to find other food and in turn other plant life and fauna would adapt to that change. I know that would be virtually impossible to create and it won't happen, but it would be really cool.
  • @Kunavi108
I wish we had more in depth research stuff instead of just a scanner. That’d be so cool
  • @Barondelculo
The custom submarine idea i really like, since people would need to find what submarine fits them the best, or what submarine is better for something
  • @Viper76PL
Man... I just want them to announce the New game already, I am so hyped for it.
  • Not a removed Feature, but i hope they will give us a Parking possibility for our
Big Submarine with the Games Launch. After all, the Cyclops had no Way of
docking anywhere, and the Dock for the Seatruck came how long after BZ launched?
  • @LeeBuddy
A lot of this stuff is REALLY cool. Would make me feel like a big brain scientist. I do wonder if maybe they removed some of this to either cut back on complexity or maybe performance issues (as you would need to build more and have more things running) .
I honestly really like the flooding of submarines as it would kinda be more forgiving and realistic.
  • @makthemaniac1
A main feature i feel would be more balanced for the transfuser would be if you could use it to analyse the dna of whatever you extracted from to discover possible weaknesses and maybe construct weapons designed to combat leviathans (non lethally of course)
Whether it be an frost gun to counter lava based leviathans or a specially designed stun gun to prevent a leviathan from grabbing you
That would be amazing since the stasis rifle is cool but still feels too easy
Being able to fabricate counters to specific leviathans using their Dna would be a lot better than just fabricating one tool to solve a huge problem
I came up with this also because fragments of tools are way too abundant in the game
Specifically when it comes to below zero
Blueprints are way too easy to get so it would be cool if you could fabricate your own blueprints based on what’s required
You’d still be able to get the basic stuff like scanners, seagliders and other stuff
This combined with multiplayer would work so well
You could have one person researching leviathan weaknesses/new blueprints, one person harvesting resources and one person ready to get everyone out in case of a hostile creature
  • @ChunkyChungus
It may be a crazy comparison, but:
How about the new Subnautica game would have a customization function like in DOOM.

You start with a submarine that can only swim and that you can build things in like lockers etc. Then, with the help of the habitat builder you build the "Submarine factory" in which you build many different pieces for the submarine. Your Sub can also enter it and you can swap out different parts of it with other ones. Some more offensive, some defensive or made for exploration or collecting. I would love that
  • @DaWrecka
Fun fact: The Specimen Analyser, or at least its model, appears in Outpost Zero in Below Zero.
