An Autistic Nonspeaking Teen (And How We Became Friends)

Published 2022-12-15
Gabe is an autistic teenager who is nonspeaking. As we sat together, I turned on some music since we are both big fans of classic rock. After a few minutes of listening together, Gabe smiled and put his hand on my shoulder. At that point I knew we had formed a friendship through our mutual interest.

  • You say "cookie" and he becomes alert. That's a teenager right there.
  • Autism stereotype: hating eye-contact Gabe: communicating through eye-contact proves once more that stereotypes are bs.

Gabe is very present in these conversations, it doesn't matter if his body language is different and he doesn't speak... autistic people are underestimated so much of the time, I'm glad he appears to have a loving family who appreciate him the way he is and allow him to engage with them in the way that works for him
  • Gabe needs some musical instruments... a guitar, a synthesizer. Something so he can express himself musically. I bet he would love it.

Getting a light tap and small smile from Gabe is so much more meaningful than most conversations ppl have.

He’s just like the silent protagonist in video games.

Them: "I would like people to understand that he is just like you and I!" Everyone in the comments: "Wow, its like he is from another world!!! 🤩🤭"
  • I love that Chris takes the time to sit, observe, leave space, and meet someone where they are. Such an important lesson for all of us.

He's such a handsome boy. Such a beautiful smile. His connection with Chris over the music is so sweet. I love this channel

I love it how Gabe's body language changes from the moment Chris puts on the music. You can see how much more comfortable, interactive and smiley he gets as time goes by. It’s lovely to watch his confidence bloom and his beautiful smile. 🥰

As a autistic person it’s nice to finally see parents who don’t try to “fix” or “cure” anything. They don’t think he is less than and they don’t think that he is incapable of communication. It’s unfortunately pretty rare to see
