UPDATES: I made some mistakes while editing and researching this video. The photo I used for Barrett Jones is actually a picture of Mike McCready from Pearl Jam at Laundry Room Studios. I found it on the studio's photo page without a caption and thought he looked like a younger Barrett Jones based on the computer in the background. Also, apparently Kurt did play drums on the first take for Marigold so he was in the room, but is absent on the recording released as the b-side to Heart Shaped Box. There is also an alternate version of Marigold with cello on it as well.

Marigold is a song written by Dave Grohl before his tenure as the drummer of Nirvana. As time went by there would be multiple versions of the songs that would be recorded and released including as a b-side to one of Nirvana's most well known singles. This is the story of the only original Nirvana song to have no writing credits from Kurt Cobain

  • Man it would have been sooooo cool if Kurt and Dave started writing songs together ALA Lennon-McCartney. Kurt would’ve helped make Dave’s songs better and Dave would’ve helped keep the weight of the band off of Kurts back. In another universe :’(
  • Kurt liked Dave's songs...when he heard him playing this in the next room he asked "Hey, what is that? It sounds good" which they harmonized on together. Alone + Easy Target and Exhausted were almost Nirvana songs as well, but Kurt didn't want to ask to change the lyrics.

more proof that Krist's bass is the secret weapon to the whole Nirvana sound
  • I love that Pat Smear has been recognized as a member of Nirvana. I believe both Dave and Krist have said that had the band continued Pat would have been made a full member of the band.
  • "Were you surprised that Kurt wanted to record your song “Marigold” during the In Utero sessions? It is the only original song on a Nirvana record that he didn’t have any hand in writing." I wrote that on the four-track machine at the house. He was in his room. I didn’t want to wake him. So I would record things, whispering quietly into a microphone. I was recording the vocal harmony to the chorus of that song, and the door opened. He goes, “What’s that?” “It’s just this thing I wrote.” “Let me hear it.” We sat there and played it a few times. I would do the high harmony, he would do the low harmony. It’s funny writing songs with other people. I’ve never done that. I write songs [for Foo Fighters] and then the band plays them with me. But sitting face to face with someone, that’s another trip. I don’t know if he had ever done that either. It was like an uncomfortable blind date. “Oh, you sing too? Let’s harmonize together.” I was kind of shy back then too. I was very flattered. But I remember, I think it might have been Steve who said, “‘Marigold’ should maybe be on the album.” I was terrified [laughs]. No, no, wait. It was that famous joke: What’s the last thing the drummer said before he got kicked out of the band? “Hey, I wrote a song.” Obviously, it didn’t make it. [“Marigold” came out as the B-side to “Heart-Shaped Box.”] I’m glad. Because the album retained the integrity of Kurt’s vision. But I was incredibly flattered. “Really, you like that?” (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/qa-dave-grohl-on-kurts-last-days-and-the-making-of-in-utero-2-108580/)
  • Marigold feels a lot like Polly compare to their more punky songs, just less sad.

I love the bassline, it's simple and easy but engaging
  • Always loved this track. It feels so innocent yet so compelling at the same time. I prefer the rough version as it shows such a tender side to a band that screamed lyrics. I remember one of the last Nirvana interviews on MTV where Kurt said he was hoping for more input and writing from the guys. Such a shame it had to end so abruptly as I can totally imagine how great more Nirvana music would have been.
  • Kurt was there for the recording of the song btw, he does the backing vocals if you listen close

This is some quality content right here
  • Nirvana probably would have broken up regardless of his passing but It would have been amazing to hear what Cobain could have brought to the table with some Foo Fighter songs.
  • Marigold is one of my fav songs by nirvana ever its truely underappreciated
  • Man, this video is awesome! Nobody talks much about this song, and is one of my favorite Nirvana songs! I really love it. Thank for this video, is pretty pretty good! 💛🌼

The best Nirvana B-side if you can count it, is You Know You’re Right. I know technically a B-side is supposed to be a song released on a single, but is often used as synonymous with cut tracks or unreleased tracks. With that definition, You Know You’re Right is best. Pure emotion.

In Mayan mythology Marigold (Cempoalxochitl) is the flower that guides the dead through “Mictlan” which is the Mayan underworld. It comes from the story of two lovers visiting a god in a mountain, I recommend people look it up!

I was born in 1990 so I cannot remember Nirvana at the height of their fame. However, I begged my parents for the With The Lights Out box set for Christmas of 2004. This was by far my favorite song on the collection. I made my parents (who only listen to rap, jazz, and gospel) play it in the car whenever possible. Lovely song.

Kurt would be really proud of Dave.
