Untangled: The Power of Governance

Published 2023-04-27
Governance matters for people and the planet. It frames laws and policies that shape our future. In this video, WWF breaks down what this means for both the planet and all of us – the people who call it home!

We need inclusive governance that values social and environmental justice and human rights, and holds corporations and governments to account. Together, let’s work for a future where nature and people thrive. #NaturePositive #MyPlanetMyRights #SDGs #LeaveNoOneBehind

  • I like this video. Yes, progress on climate change and conservation has to start with accountable governance.

Governing over people does not work without eventual horrific oppression. ('Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely') Only people willing to obey, will obey the "governance". People must want to choose to follow wise guidelines. However: many are undereducated. or poor, and live in despair, desperate focused only their life sustaining needs for the day in front of them, not the consequences decades into the future. Many are aware, but are selfish and choose to use up what they want for themselves, not caring about the proverbial "Goose", as long as they get as many of it's "Golden Eggs" as they can before anyone else does. There 'should be' regulations. And sufficient penalties for those who violate them. Including Government Leaders and whole Governments. But "governance" (other than oppression or slavery) won't make people comply. Education and the priority of Role Modeling and teaching our children God's Authority and precepts, ....morality, selflessness, love and respect for God's Creation and love for each other... and wisdom, these things must first be instilled into our culture. Instead of upside down perversions regarding "free" choices. And instead of putting the temporary value of "the environment" over the eternal spiritual value of human beings. Although, i do think cultures like old Hawaiian taboos were probably effective in small community societies. There, out of wisdom regarding preserving the balance of taking from the environment vs letting the environment recover, they had immediate strict "governances" that everyone was taught and aware of from childhood: get caught catching the wrong species of fish out of the approved season, and you would get your hand cut off ...or your head. Hopefully our future "governances" won't be that severe. This type of concept "sounds good" on the surface, in ideal conditions. But in reality, in our 'Fallen world' (as per God's Word), sinful people will not consistently obey. Here in California we must now sort out any organic food waste to go to compost landfill, separate from our non organic trash. (Apparently to, albeit insignificantly, reduce methane emission. And I wonder: - 1. Won't the organic matter emit methane regardless of it being in organic only landfill vs intermixed with non organic trash? 2. Why minimize methane? Why not collect it as an energy source to convert into electricity?) Anyways what I am seeing (hearing of anecdotally from people I ask) ... Only a very few are actually complying with this mandate. Just as only a very few understand how to sort for recycling. Instead of "governance", I'm thinking we ought to focus more on rewarding people who DO comply with conservation efforts, rather than creating laws that people won't follow, or cutting off hands of people in desperate need trying to simply to survive like Viktor Hugo's character of the Good Man "Jean Valjean".

Will you please stop talking about the needs of humans and start talking about the horrific decline in all species including keystone species and the fact that if we don’t stop the slaughter and wilful destruction of habitat there soon won’t be anything left with which to support humans!
