Vocal Coach/Arranger Reacts to TENACIOUS D - THE PICK OF DESTINY

2024-04-12に共有
In this video, I react for the first time to A MOVIE! “The Pick Of Destiny” by Jack Black’s Tenacious D. I analyse the incredibly… exhilarating musical performances, explain and demonstrate the featured vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. I love a good blend of rock, singing and comedy! This was a jolly good time indeed.

Not recognizing Meatloaf might just be the part of this reaction I was most amused by. "Actually a suppressed rockstar" was really endearing. Love you Lolli!
  • Not only was that actually Dio in the opening song, but his father was played by Meatloaf. Not just a suppressed rock star, but another actual rock legend. There's a video of Dio singing his part and Jack being in awe of him. Then Dio actually asked if there was more for him to do, because he really liked the project. Side note: Kickapoo is a real town. IDK if there's one in Missouri or not, but there is one up in Wisconsin for sure, as well as a Kickapoo river.
  • Kickapoo is possibly the greatest opening scene from any comedy movie! RIP RJD.
  • The 4 droogies were a cameo from the film Clockwork Orange and in that film mostly cockney accents.

2:58 "There seems to be some continuity between him and his dad's voice, so it's kinda like... dad, I got this from you." Incredibly flattering towards actual Jack Black since the dad in this scene is straight up Meatloaf.

Also, the part where they don't remember the song they played at the end of the movie is what leads to "Tribute" which was part of their self titled album in 2001.
  • @BeweProds
There's a funny story regarding Dio's part in the Movie. Dio brought his own microphone but Jack Black told him not to use it because they already had some. Dio warned them and fried their microphone on the first take. They then used his microphone.

The winner of the Finnish version of The Voice as few years back auditioned with Master Exploder from this movie.

BTW, those side beard things are called "Sideburns" in honor of Union Army General Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 – September 13, 1881) His spectacular growth of whiskers became known as "sideburns", deriving from the two parts of his surname.

It blows my mind that the kid who played baby Jables Black is Barry from The Goldbergs
  • And of course the one legged dude is Tim Robbins, you know, Andy from Shawshank Redemption.
  • @LordVolkov
Regarding the 'demonization of cockneys' 😉 The masked goons are a Clockwork Orange reference, who in that movie speak a strange blend of English/Russian slang called Nadsat - with the obligatory Cockney accents 🤣🤣🤣
  • The British gang that find him on the bench is a reference to A Clockwork Orange.

One song you should check out after now having watched this and tribute is "The ballad of Hollywood jack and the rage cage" It's basically a song of everything that happened after this. Jack's fame in Hollywood, how they drifted and Kyle went down hill while jack kept rising, and how they reunited and Jack brought Kyle back up.
  • Highly recommend a documentary done by Dave Grohl called Sound City. It's about the studio of the same name in Van Nuys, LA. When the studio closed Grohl bought the sound board, and had it moved up to his home studio in Seattle. He decided to do a look back at all the legendary albums recorded at Sound City (including Nevermind by Nirvana) while at the same time asking the artist to his home to record new songs on that old sound board.

Thanks for doing this fairy, honestly not enough reactions to this masterpiece of a movie. Keep up the good work!
  • Yay!!! So happy you are checking this out. I can't believe more music reactors have not done this.
