Smoker Compartments are unique to Healthcare, Penitentiary. It allows the facility to defend in place i.e. not evacuate the building it also helps protect those people incapable of self preservation Healthcare patients and persons in prison, incarcerated cannot evacuate on their own nor do we actually want them to. As for prisoners we do not want to release them into the public. As for healthcare we want to be able to keep our loved ones on emergency power i.e. the ventilator in a protected environment and/or medical gases to help keep them alive. These items are not available outside therefore we want to evacuate them i.e. move them to another part of the building another smoke compartment

This video is great, thank you. the only thign I am not understanding is where you got the info that the area of refuge occupant load factor is 30ft^2/person. 2018 NFPA 101 says the occupant load factor for a healthcare occupancies with sleeping departments.

FYI. I have not found a requirement for fire/smoke dampers at smoke barriers. Only smoke dampers are required by 2015 IBC 717.5.5. Also, you could do a whole separate video on smoke barriers in attics so I don't have to? Continuity to the roof deck, continuity to eaves, rated gyp. walls have to have gyp. bd. on both sides in the attic, walls need to be labeled, smoke barriers in attics cannot shift from the walls below them unless a horizontal rated assembly connects them, openings have to be protected, smoke dampers need to be on HVAC ducts in the attic that serve both compartments, smoke dampers in attics require access, etc. This is a constant battle with misunderstanding. Also, there is a typo: "smoker" compartment.
