Perhaps lesser known than Joplin's other works of ragtime - such as The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag - Solace is nevertheless a shining example of the composer's talent, with Schubertian influences evident throughout the piece. Solace was one of the many Joplin works adapted by Marvin Hamlisch in the film The Sting. More recently, it was used in the soundtrack to the acclaimed video game, BioShock Infinite.
