Most actors know that, at some point, they’re going to have to cut and color their hair for a part in a movie or tv show. But sometimes, a role requires an even bigger change: a fully shaved head. While these days it’s easy enough for the amazing makeup and CGI teams to work around an actors real hair, there are the rare actors who are not only willing to cut their hair for real, but actually want to do it! Whether it’s to lend authenticity to a role, to fully get into the character, or just because it would make things a whole lot easier, these fearless actors threw caution to the wind and pulled out the clippers. Kristen Stewart had always wanted to shave off her famous brown locks, and when her deep sea thriller Underwater came along, it was the perfect opportunity. Millie Bobby Brown was only twelve years old when she shaved her head for Eleven in Stranger Things, and never looked back. Karen Gillan was terrified to cut her gorgeous red hair to play Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, but when Marvel comes calling, you don’t say no. The Kissing Booth’s Joey King went bald for her role in The Act, Cara Delevigne did the same to play opposite Jaden Smith in Life In A Year, and Amandla Stenberg felt totally liberated by their own head-shaving journey. Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, and Olivia Cooke all did it on screen, but no one beats Charlize Theron and her iconic look as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road!

I just shaved my head two days ago and it’s honestly bizarrely cathartic. I was terrified, but I had to for medical reasons and I’m honestly loving it. I love how I look. It makes my features look way more feminine somehow. And I love how excited I am to really just be able to grow my hair out healthy. I get to really take care of it this time and grow super healthy hair. It’s liberating too, and I just feel great with it.
