They're the only thing protecting your head from the pavement in a crash, but are all motorcycle helmets built the same? Marketplace puts motorcycle helmets from third-party sellers on Amazon, eBay and Walmart to the test, and shows how easy it can be to fall for fake safety certifications.

I would have liked to see them lab test an authentic DOT helmet, to see how it compared to the knock-offs.

A rare marketplace L. 1. DOT certification is the worst type of certification out there. A Beanie helmet DOT certified. How could they not have taken 5 mins of research and see the great work Ryan at Fortnine has done on this subject.
  • As a former paramedic I can tell you that helmets will keep you fairly Safe but once you get over 50mph you chances of becoming a vegetable for life rises sharply.

I have salad bowls in my kitchen that will protect you more than a DOT-only helmet. If CBC would have done five minutes of research before filming this, they would have found that any motorcyclist with half a brain is looking for an ECE or SNELL rating.

I've been a rider for over 50 years. Snell was THE standard with DOT being a distant second. No helmet should be polycarbonate (plastic) and you see why in the impact test. Helmets should NOT bounce, but begin to delaminate to absorb impact. You don't want your head to hit a post and bounce causing neck injury. A test we used to do "back in the day" is to drop them on the floor from 6 feet, similar to the impact test in the video. If they bounced they failed. If they hit the floor and stayed, they were typically fiberglass and did not bounce. DOT helmets would bounce, SNELL would not. The expanded foam (styrofoam) inner padding was the secondary absorption medium and would crush as it absorbed the head moving upon impact and also from the shell delaminating. One crash and throw it away. It did it's job. Good video but not in depth enough. Too bad about the fakes coming in from overseas now. Didn't have that problem not too long ago. My helments? Snell approved Arai. Got a $30 head, get a $30 helmet. There's a reason Arai runs $800 and up. Stay safe, dress for the slide, not the ride, and ATGATT. (All The Gear All The Time.)

Who the heck buys safety equipment from eBay, Amazon and Walmart.
  • @800over
The fact that Amazon and Walmart have these online and take no responsibility is criminal. Have they contacted every person who already bought one of these helmets and told them to return them with a full refund? Anything less is unacceptable.
  • Don't buy your motorcycle safety gear online.. period. Go to a local shop that sells the bikes and the gear. You can talk to them too and ask questions, try on the helmets, gloves, jackets etc. and find something that fits you well and is comfortable. It's important for the gear to be safety compliant. It's also important that you can feel comfortable wearing it for hours on end while out riding. And stuff hanging off of a helmet, yes it's dangerous but it's also going to get really noisy at higher speeds due to bad airflow. Just my $0.02. Been riding since 1989. Keep the rubber side down Y'all.
  • Snell keeps an active list of helmets of they certify and in my opinion is the best place to start your investigation before buying a helmet . Not just motorcycle helmets. Do not rely on DOT certification as the standard , Snell standards are higher and also DOT approved for on road use. It has been said , if you have a $50 head , wear a $50 dollar helmet.
  • @tuxediomafia
All the helmets I have purchased here in canada have a "SNELL" rating. curious as to why you didnt cover that? being CBC in canada....
  • I've been riding motorcycles since 1988, the ONLY helmet brand that protects my head? ARAI, without question!
  • @werta5000
I love that we never come up with our own standards, just copy the US standard and call it a day. The DOT spec is old, it isn't meaningless when it's a reputable manufacture. There are new better ratings and standard systems, the government should do more in house tests that hold companies to account
  • @jiafengli7648
Even the helmet actually passed the self-certified DOT standard only, it's still a crap, go for ECE or at least SNELL.
  • In my humble recommendation, DOT is a trash certification and is only there to let you ride with it on US/Canada Roads. Get something with either ECE 22.05/22.06 or Snell on top if you want a foundation that has updated regulations and actually cares about riders and the sports surrounding motorcycles.
  • @SandStormPower
Current safety norm here in Europe, is ece22.06 All legal helmets need to have this certification to be sold in European countries.
