I've done this a few times, it's actually quite exciting to do! Its like a Tech Treasure Hunt (TM) lol

Very interesting Mat. Might give this a go myself. Thank you.
  • @n8sot
I wish these would end up closer to me because this would be some real fun and help with recovery!!!!! maybe I should watch more often......because, you never know where they could end up! Another great topic Mat! Thanks for keeping the hobby going!!! 73, N8SOT
  • We had big baloon tracking across the US in early February, from China, which my relatives near Myrtle Beach, SC, saw the US Military shot down there. No further information if it was also carrying Chinese Take Away meals. 😊
  • There is even better software for this TTGO that even provides a landing forecast 😉. Best Regards PS And if you want to save yourself the tablet and have an Android car radio installed in your car or one that supports Android Auto, there is also a way to display and operate this on your vehicle display

I have been tracking weather ballons for years. Living 15 miles away from the Camborne launch site, there's rearly a landing near me to collect the transmitter.
  • can this lora device be used as the balloons transmitter? so could this be applied as a personal vehicle tracker device in case your car gets stolen? Thanks in advance and maybe you could make a video on this
  • Do the authorities give a monetary reward for the return of their spent balloon and transmitter ?
  • @WHNorthcote
Can this be paired with a Raspberry Pi zero like a DMR hotspot, or can it just be used as is?
  • @MrHolozip
What’s the ettiequte when picking these up? Do you return them to the sender with a note, pop it onto another balloon and hope someone else gets it the next time, etc?

The hardware is certainly cheap enough at $16. I might give it a go. I do live in the states so as yet I am not sure if the system will do the same here.
  • @ahmetmutlu348
Well i think this system has better potential for offline device tracking i mean if the weather baloon can transmit far distant signals ... then why not a arduino device 😅 Additionally for data transmission... therefore usage chices are near limitless 😊 like place transreceiver where a free wifi spot exists then use that net from 10km away at home may be as simple general ideas 😊 by usi this devices as proxy ...

Ya.. I remember Back in the Day.. (With CB..) You could make a small Transmitter..(milli-watts output only) on channel 14 (27.125 MHz) The challenge was to find it.. (Somewhere in Town).. They called this challenge a (Rabbit Hunt.. Or Perhaps Mouse Hunt..) but whatever it was called.. All you had to do was (Drive around and BURN Gas).. when it was cheap.. Using a home brew Handheld 3 or 4 element (Yagi) directional finding Antenna.. (And your CB).. (It was Fun).. So the same thing could be done with this TX LPU Device / And an SDR. but NOT Using your cell phone with GPS as shown in the Video (That's Cheating..) (Do it Old School).. with a YAGI.. (Kids today have it too easy) Back in my day.. We had to find these things Driving (Up Hill) Both ways.
