  • In our church we donā€™t have music stands. We have one lyrics screen at just above head height at the back of the room. And the lyrics often go wrong so itā€™s really important to LEARN the words. Then it also helps you to really lead the church in real worship

Guilty as charged with looking at my iPad music just about the whole time. šŸ˜© Iā€™m going to practice looking up during practice sessions now for sure. Thanks for a great video.

Dang ! Convicted-but I will definitely be employing the principles that you have presented. And youā€™re right- it is a privilege to be able to lead others in worship of our Holy God! Thank you Spencer.

Good info! Thank you! Iā€™ll share this with my team.

Thanks for this advice. I do appreciate it.

We're a small church without a lot of help. I use a Logitech clicker to progress word slides through PowerPoint while leading worship. I've learned to do it pretty smoothly while I sing. Not an option to look away from the monitor for long periods of time or to close my eyes! I do practice a lot with my slides so I can look at people while I lead. I love the closed off concept for body language! Been trying to figure out a way to explain this to my singers.
  • Yeh, point 1 is gold! (To be fair, I'm pretty rough, so it was either singing the correct words or engaging!) But as my ability grows, I need to use it on a 'need to know' basis. My lofty goal is to not even need it (even though its there).

Thank you so much for your content. Much appreciated. One tip, could you raise the the volume on your videos? It's very low even with my volume all the way up. Thank you. ā¤

This is something that's so hard for me but God called me to it. I want to be better. Some Sundays I feel confident and others, even with my planning, I get tripped up unless I'm singing. Your tips and advice have helped me so much since I started leading. I have a ways to go but from the person I was before, the Lord's work in me is so evident.
  • This video really helps me have a good preparation of how to lead the people worship God Inside the church... I must invest my time starting now to improve myself and the team in worship leading. Thank you Bro Spencer.. God bless you more! šŸ™šŸ˜€āœØ

I was told by my Pastor to never look at the people, but at the back wall. And we are drilled on walking the "stage"...move around to be super hype and all. Sometimes I have a problem with this because I don't feel as if it's just a MUST to have everyone moving around. I do love to have a posture of worship through open body language. Can you give me some guidance on this please?
  • @sam45354
So I should practice the songs at home along with the backtrack and words and chords till I can play it without the lyrics and chords?
  • @left0verture
Thanks man - good basic stuff, but you have to start with the basics, right? Iā€™ve been a musician all my life (Iā€™m now mid 60ā€™s) and just joined one of the teams at my church. Iā€™m most definitely not a ā€œcool kidā€ - I use an iPad with OnSong because 1. itā€™s a smaller footprint than a music stand, because 2. fiddling with paper is distracting and because 3. BIG FONTS for old eyes! That having been said, Iā€™m hungry for good advice. Iā€™m a decent musician, but not so much in the stage presence department, and I know that can be a distraction. I figure my job is to find a balance. I donā€™t want to be a ā€œrock starā€ with flashy clothes and stage mannerisms, nor do I want to be a stiff, uncomfortable mannequin with a guitar. Somewhere in between there must be a way to become almost transparent - a conduit for the message. Looking forward to doing this better every week. Thanks especially for #1 - I confess, I lean on that iPad more than I want to. Gonna work on thatā€¦!
  • @debleeann81
If I donā€™t watch my music, sometimes I forget where I am in the song because I get distracted
  • @Adamdwines
Thanks for making me feel uncomfortable about feeling uncomfortable šŸ˜†

I strongly believe that the confidence monitor should be only for the occasional brain fart, not as a substitute for knowing the songs. Last Sunday, we had a confidence monitor malfunction during the first 2 songs. Thankfully, I knew the lyrics. Otherwise, this would have been really awkward.
  • @David-yv6ow
how about get rid of the music stand? Learn the song youā€™re playing and then play it.
