Encanto DOESN'T make sense

By popular demand, here is Disney's latest entry to the iconic Disney Princess family; 'Encanto'! A story about the only Madrigal child with no powers, Mirabel goes on a quest to find out what's hurting her family's magic.

Released in theaters and now available on Disney+, audiences and critics seem to love this movie, and after seeing it for myself, here are some of my thoughts!

UPDATE:
To avoid repeating comments, here's to clear things up:

1. I'm not calling Mirabel a princess, I called her a Disney Princess, two very different things. You don't have to be a princess/royalty to be a Disney princess.

2. Yes, she's a Disney princess. It's a Disney princess movie. I based the script off of the Disney wiki, if you're against that source of information then that's not my problem.

2. I don't count Dolores's 'soundproof room' which was confirmed by the creators cause it was never mentioned/established in the movie.

3. No, I didn't call Antonio Mirabel's brother, I said she "sees" him as a brother, I'm aware he's her cousin.

4. Dolores's "I can hear him now" can interpreted in both ways, either she was talking about Mariano or Bruno. I personally think Lin did that on purpose.

5. I had to gloss through the last three songs cause the video was already too long as it is, to those who wanted my input on it, I'm sorry :( But here are my thoughts on them:

• What Else Can I Do?
Probably the most upbeat song, I like it a lot. The colors plus Isabella and Mirabel's voice blend so well. Lyrics are not as deep as 'Surface Pressure' but it's still great

• Dos Oruguitas
Underrated. With the song coupled with the flashback scene/Abuela & Mirabel hugging scene makes it hit even harder. The song is simple and that's what makes it great. (I recommend listening to the Spanish version though)

• All of You
Not the strongest entry, but serves well for a finale.

Am I the only one that felt like Bruno didn’t get the proper apology he deserves? This man literally spent 10 years wasting away in the walls and he doesn’t even get a apology from anybody!
  • @baileyyh72
pretty sure the reason dolores couldn’t hear the house cracking is because the doors were flickering and everyone’s powers weren’t working (like luisa feeling weak). edit: yes i understand that the party being loud could’ve been a contributing factor, i was just suggesting an idea
  • @maryludwig690
My theory on why Dolores doesn't always hear everything is that her room is soundproof to let her sleep.
  • The most "fantastical and magical" about the family Madrigal, is abuela Alma apologizing instead of slap the miércoles out of Mirabel.

Encanto isn't a princess movie. There's no princess, prince to marry, or even leader's daughter. Give Dolores a break btw, she heard these things, she just didn't tell anyone because she knew they wouldn't believe her.
  • @gh0stroy
I believe there were underdeveloped characters simply because there was just too many characters. The Madrigals are a big family, so it was probably best to focus the screentime on the more relevant characters :(

What I liked about Encanto was that Mirabel wasn’t fixed but rather accepted In the end instead of making her save the magic and become the most powerful and respected, they had the family stop giving her unrealistic expectations and just accepted her for who she was even if she didn’t have a gift
  • The biggest issue with Dolores isn't even her powers not making sense it's the fact that during the dinner scene they tell us that like her character trair or whatever is that she can't keep a secret - she literally couldn't keep a huge family issue until after dinner or something - and yet she?? kept Bruno secret for like 10 years?????

Encanto is the type of movie that is definitely gonna have a series
  • @OtterWalruse
I feel like Dolores hears everything and nothing. She's probably become kinda good at ignoring what she's hearing when she's having fun or she hears so much that it tunes out somethings
  • @KesiIshtar
I like the little scene when Abuela snaps at Mirabel's father and he snapped back about wanting to protect his daughter. Like what a good dad
  • @meme-bu8qu
Every single family member needs to apologize to Mirabel, her parents included.
  • My friend kept saying that the ending was stupid because mirabel never got powers ,, that would make the ending stupid? Her family finally sees mirabel that’s enough she doesn’t need powers to be loved or accepted by her grandma, she is enough by herself.
  • Poor Dolores... She must've had to hear a lot of "banging" as a child.

Pedro's love for his family was what created the magic in the first place. The magic died because they started to only value each other for their gifts. Once they remembered how much they loved each other outside of their gifts, their love brought the magic back. It's not that they still needed their gifts even though they had the power of family, the power of family created the magic both times. I love the song "All of You" because it's them learning that the miracle is each other, not the gifts.

Honestly if this movie just had 5 more minutes to add a scene where we see the family after Mirabel is lost and the house is destroyed would have made this movie feel next level for me. I absolutely loved when abuela yelled at mirabel because it felt so raw and real. It’s the exact response that many parents and head of households would give to what they deem an “out of control” child. That sort of toxic response reminded me of my own family. Everything wrong is “because of you” not them. That’s why I was a little disappointed with the quick turn around of abuela and just the house getting restored so quickly afterwards. It would have been amazing not having mirabel in a scene for 5 minutes and just being able to see the damage from Abuela’s perspective. Her slowly realizing just how broken this family is because of her, without the magic getting in the way. She could have seen how worthless Lucia felt without her strength, or how her placing her ideals on flower girl was crushing her (maybe her even noticing how she didn’t like the romantic dude at all), or her seeing how devasted and panicked mirabel’s parents were. Or her seeing how dorales isn’t in pain anymore without the magic. Or her just seeing how entirely lost everyone was in who they were without their magic. And even a scene where abuela gets bombarded with questions of what to do now by everyone and it taking her back to how she felt before when her village was attacked and her husband lost. I feel like just a 5 minute scene establishing where the family was without mirabel and magic would have really put more depth on abuela, would have established how important mirabel is to the family even more so, and shown the thinking and processing abuela went through after her fight with mirabel and before meeting back up with her. I think it also would have made the backstory of abuela a lot less out of no where and there could have even been a cute line where she said that when the house was being destroyed she felt herself go back to when she was all alone after her husband died but she realizes that she’s not all alone cuz she has all of her family and the strong head mirabel there to help her. Idk I just feel like there was a part missing when the house was destroyed and everyone was just kinda there but we get nothing, just a cut to mirabel at the lake

We all know the perfect movie doesn’t exist, but this definitely turned out better than the last, mainly because I can feel how much passion they poured in it. They tried, I believe such a concept would have worked best for a TV show so each character would have gotten the screentime they deserved, Camilo barely has five minutes and yet he’s a fan favorite.
  • I kind of get the feeling that Dolores did hear the house breaking, abuela talking about the miracle, etc. but, just like the other children, might carry a lot of pressure to be perfect. She probably doesn’t always say or voice what she hears, or is very selective about what she shares with the family. She uses her powers for the “good” of the family and never to try to “ruin” or hurt the family. Clearly, she saw how her Tio Bruno was treated for hurting the family, and probably wanted to avoid that guilt and shame.
  • @djdiarrhea1173
I think the reason Antonio didn’t get more plot line was to show how alone mirabel feels. Not being able to relate to anyone about not having powers is really what pushes the plot line.
