Night of the Living Dead - Nails in the Coffin

Published 2024-05-24
- I evaluate a victim’s response to a life-threatening situation based on a rating system I've coined as "Nails in the Coffin." When someone is killed on-screen, their actions and decisions determine the number of "Nails" they receive. If they exhibit tremendous resilience and make judicious choices, they can earn a commendable Four Nails in the Coffin. However, suppose they make inexplicable blunders or engage in imprudent actions, such as freezing in place or running upstairs instead of seeking safety outside. In that case, assigning just One Nail in the Coffin is appropriate.
If the victim stood no chance of survival no matter what they could have done, I could give them 2 Nails in the Coffin.

Great movie ... controversial ending but overall... good
  • Awesome video! Great trilogy to cover! The only sympathy I have for Harry is that he was a father and husband trying to protect his girls, but cooperation was key, and being an AH made it so even if he was right, it's human nature to reject someone acting like him, so his attitude got them all killed. Without division, there would have been less stress, and maybe everything could have worked out better. I always felt bad for Helen. Married to a crumb. Daughter killed. Then killed herself by her reanimated daughter. Still, I never understood her reaction. Denial maybe? It was like she was so stunned her daughter turned. But in the situation, as awful as it would have been, she had to consider the possibility, and when presented with the facts, should have gotten out of there instead of giving in. I suppose that all comes out of the time the film was made, back when certain horrors had to be overwhelmingly shocking. Ben's death, even as my view of the film has evolved and I recognize how his stubbornness also hurt the group, still feels like a gut punch. After everything, to die at the hands of the posse due to misidentification is a particularly cruel exclamation point...but a very powerful message about the fragility of life, the importance of decisions. Can't wait for Dawn of the Dead!
