Bangladesh has recently seen some of its worst violence in decades - violence sparked by student protests against a government-job quota system that demonstrators say favoured supporters of the ruling Awami League party.

The Country’s Supreme Court has now scrapped the quota. Still, with dozens killed and hundreds arrested, serious questions remain over the government’s handling of the crisis, with students demanding meaningful change in a country where they believe democratic values are at risk.

Join us over the next half an hour as Mohammad Arafat, Bangladesh’s minister of state for information and broadcasting, talks to Al Jazeera.

  • Government didn't come to any discussion. All he said is totally lie. Awami league, Sheikh Hasina, controlled all the judicial process. If the students come to any judicial process, its like nonsense thing to go against this autocratic government.

They are liar. They are arresting students and also their parents for participating in that protest. They took death file from hospitals too so that the real death number never reveal. Who will help us? Ain't we human? How come such people are ruling and killing us. I am tired of crying everyday. Seeing videos of my brothers and sisters who got killed by this evil.

Why is one sided talks arranged? Why aren't here representatives from students and independent civil societies? This minister is lying through his teeth. By allowing him to talk alone, Aljazeera let the biased, one sided lies telecast. It's not the precedence of good journalism

The quota system worked as follows: If only 8% of the quota was filled, the remaining 48% would remain vacant and would not be opened for the general public.
