Jimmy Saville was one of Britain’s best-loved presenters till soon after his death when decades of sexual abuse were revealed.

Mark Williams-Thomas is the private investigator who revealed Saville to be a paedophile. Ten years since his exposé, Mark blows the lid on the cover-ups that enabled one of the country’s most prolific sex offenders to get away with his crimes.

Warning: this episode covers some difficult and disturbing subjects.

Extraordinary Lives is a podcast from the team behind LADbible’s Minutes With.

We speak to remarkable people who each have a unique story to tell - spies, terrorists, hackers, gangsters, killers, people with particular conditions, and those who’ve lived unreal experiences. These are the stories that resonated the most with LADbible’s audience when they were originally told on Minutes With.

In this podcast, LADbible’s Ben Powell-Jones sits down with those individuals for a more in-depth conversation, revealing untold tales for the first time.

  • I think it was Johnny rotten who said it first and nobody believed him

he didnt expose savile .savile was exposed for years but it was blocked by authorities
  • Nothing, absolutely nothing, is more important than child protection. We need more people like this.
  • A woman has recently been released from prison after 'taking out' a pedophile who abused her sons. Good on her I say because the police are not up to the task of protecting us and our youngsters as it seems the perpetrator has more rights than the victim. There should be more actors like this lovely lady and then those who offend and change their names and continue to carry out their evil crimes may be stopped.
  • Even back in the 70s when I was a teenager we all thought Jimmy Saville was creepy and weird, we didn't know anybody that liked him, but the BBC kept pushing him onto TV and the radio.

My child was groomed and raped by an online predator when she was only 14. She only disclosed her trauma recently, in her 20s. She has found, with support of her counsellor, the bravery to report the offender to the police. She's presented evidence of text messages and online communications with her rapist from the time she was underage, plus statements on where the offences occurred and description of his apartment etc to detectives. Unfortunately, the cop assigned to the case is furthering her trauma by badgering her about not reporting her rapist at time of the offence so she could be " swabbed" and isn't following up leads of witnesses who met the offender at time of the abuse occurring. My daughter's mental health has been wrecked by the abuse and exploitation suffered at hands of a paedophile and she feels further let down by a case detective who seems utterly apathetic and reluctant to properly investigate a historic sexual assault case. I know the offender's name, I know where he lives..... I don't believe in vigilante justice, but I can empathise with anyone tempted to mete out punishment to a paedophile when the police can't be bothered listening to a young woman whose life has been ruined since aged 14 by ptsd and depression after a sick man used and abused her.

My mum worked at a hospital that Saville "helped" at in the 80s. All the nurses knew to never go in the lift alone with him

In the mid eighties I worked at Stoke mandeville hospital as a driver. I was there for about two years. Quite often Jimmy would come into the drivers restroom and would make a brew. Sometimes we would work late shifts .usually on our own. In the times I was on my own and our paths would cross. He approached me on five occasions and said show me your d#$k. The next day I reported it to my deputy driver. She said ohh he's just pulling your leg. Ignore it. Perhaps you are just sensitive. Later I told the head driver I find Jimmy creepy. I told him what I told the deputy head driver he just shrugged it off. It was only a few year later Jimmy died . I knew he was a dodgy person.
  • I still can’t believe any parents would leave their tiny babies in an apartment on their own. It boggles the mind. I feel awful that it happened to the McCanns, but I don’t know how anyone could ever do that and think it’s safe.

He’s going after Scientology and I’m soooo here for it

  • @KleosAu
I'm not a survivor of child or sexual abuse but thank you for everything you do, I do my absolute best to protect both my kids and wife from the horrors of life.
  • There are only a few men like this man. A REAL man who was and is not a coward or fear rejection. Well done !!
  • Madeleine’s parents told all their friends and family the night of her ‘disappearance’ that the shutters had been ‘jemmied’ or jammed open and some told the mainstream British media within hours that they had been smashed. There was no sign of a break in and no sign of forced entry. Which means the parents lied.

I moved from Guernsey to Leeds in 1980 and lived not far from Jimmy Savilles house. I was told way back then by a new friend to stay away from that area as Jimmy liked young boys. It was very well known a long time ago but ignored

What’s with the bollocks about Savile not being suspected in 2011? The rumours had been around for multiple decades, and it surprised no one when it came out
  • @scsutton1
I always thought after the first one of these that I'd want to see an extended interview with this guy. Thanks for doing just that.

I used to work as a part time news cameraman at the height of the Savile revelations and I remember explaining to a news editor that around the time of Saviles death, something felt off which I couldn't explain at the time (bearing in mind I knew absolutely nothing about his activities). Then it dawned on me that when a celebrity of Saviles stature passes away, fellow celebs line up around the block to pay tribute. This didnt really happen with Jimmy Savile (one or two minor b-listers said a few words and that was about it) because THEY ALL KNEW WHAT HE WAS UP TOO. Most people don't realise just how influential Savile was. He invented modern disco and acted as advisor to the Beattles (its been said he origionally advised them to lay off the turing and focus more on recording, laying the groundwork for St Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band) and thats before considering his friends which was basically ANYONE in a position of power in the UK in the 60s, 70s and 80s. That man had clout seldom seen, so when the celebrity world greeted his death with almost complete silence, it truely was deafening in my ears at least. As an interesting side note one of my old timer mates knew Savile back in the 50s. My mate PL (you know who you are Paddy!!) was well known as a local hard man around the Leeds area but to this day admits Jimmy Savile was the only man he ever met that terrified him in spite of being just over half his size!
