Some people think we need a Steam Deck 2 sooner rather than later. I'm not so convinced.

  • The Steam Deck single-handedly converted me to PC gaming. Being able to hit the power button and instantly play for 5-10 minutes at a time has allowed me to get back into gaming for the first time in years. This thing is revolutionary.

My daughter broke her arm last night, and is getting used to all the things she can't do - such as play with a normal controller. I love my Deck already, but the ability to change all the controls so she can play games, one handed using only one side and the track pads, is incredible. It made her day. What a great and versatile device.

Also a software developer, I had pretty much abandoned PC in favour of console for the ease of use and low entry cost. The Steam Deck is the only thing that brought me back, I can tinker as little or as much as I want and I have fewer stability problems than I ever did on PC with driver issues, crashes etc. Not to say it doesn't happen, but I definitely have fewer issues. I totally agree, I just want to sit back and relax in the evening, not be reinstalling drivers because my favourite game has decided to start crashing.

The leap I beg Valve to do is Standalone VR headset powered by SteamOS. But maybe that's just me.
  • I'm a software developer as well, got the steamdeck oled! I must say even if I have a capable machine which can play games! At the end of the day, I just want to get off that screen that I've been working on! Jump in couch hit the power button, and straight get back in the game the way I left it with zero-issue to encounter in the middle! I already have my time settle to ticker, debug do stuff get angry other time! When I want to game let me game in peace!
  • A steamdeck 2, I would guess, would come out at the 5 year or 6 year mark. I hope they'd keep a similar form factor because I really like how it's set up

Mostly a console gamer for life here, but lately the itch to try the steam deck was too much. Snagged the entry level model for $225 on marketplace. Truly loving this machine and its hybrid approach.

I always found it interesting that the Steam Deck Dock was not called the Steam Dock because it's a single character change and still gets the Idea across so I personally see that naming decision to be evidence for a more traditional console version called the Steam Dock with higher specs.

Only two years? That's not old. The steam deck is a beast of a machine. If you know how to fiddle with it you can almost play any game past and present. This machine is full of limitless potential.

The SteamDeck is still a King. People only want a Steam Deck 2 because there is no Steam Console. If valve launched a powerful Steam Console and VideoCard addon that turned the Steam Console into the Steam Console Pro, kind of like Xbox Series X/S. Then people would not want a steam deck 2 so quickly. Also, imagine if you only needed to buy an addon to turn series S into series X.
  • @seraaron
I also think people shouldn't be so eager for a steam deck 2, because as the Phawx said, "valve aren't very good at counting to 3" (paraphrased)

Regarding the tinkering argument: I think there's a difference between tinkering because you WANT to VS HAVING to tinker for things to even work in the first place
  • @hamimabd
It's funny how a lot of PC gamers said windows is for gaming. Yet a lot of people said deck is less problematic 😂 it makes me proud as a Linux fan❤
  • @codeofcodedotorg
Steam Deck needs to be sold in every store. I love mine, but not enough people have access to it.
  • @seraaron
Whether or not the steam deck is "showing it's age" really depends on what games you're trying to play on it. You may as well say you only play AAA games, and if that's the case you probably shouldn't have bought a steam deck in the first place. Meanwhile indie games and older gems work a dream, and that back catalogue is getting bigger and bigger as Valve continues to push for more and and more games to be deck verified. I'm particularly interested in seeing more games from the PS360 get ported to PC (or verified if they are already ported), because they would run perfectly on deck (and the xperia and rpcs3 emulators still leave a lot to be desired).
  • @Dracossaint
Here's the truth and it always has been. You don't have to upgrade every cycle. People clammering that the steamdeck apu is from 2020. Heres some news for ya, google how the 1080 ti is holding up at 1080p to this day.
  • @revmaillet

  • @mr_sn4k3s
Valve is genius literally has crafted the new entry level PC and it comes with its own controlller and screen when you think about it, a new era
