YMC Webinar: Tools for Regional Scale Risk Assessments in the San Francisco Bay Area

Published 2023-09-05
EERI’s Younger Members Committee (YMC) hosted this webinar introducing and summarizing a series of tools that Pacific Gas and Electric Co (PG&E) is developing for performing regional risk assessments in the San Francisco Bay Area. These tools are developed for earthquake scenarios that capture the spatial correlation of realistic ground motions associated with a rate of occurrence at each selected location. The speakers discuss (1) a raster-based landslide model based on multi-modal analysis that provides the likelihood of earthquake-induced slope failure and estimated runout, calibrated based on historical data; (2) a raster-based model of liquefaction that provides likelihood, vertical settlement, and lateral displacement, based on a 3D geological model, a CPT and SPT dataset, and an updated regional groundwater model; and (3) an example application that highlights the importance of correlated ground motion for quantifying risk and impact of risk attitude on the risk scores. These tools will help prepare for earthquakes in the Bay Area.
