Do not underestimate visibility. It's probably the biggest lesson I have taken from my most recent job. I was up for promotion and on paper my performance was almost double that of another candidate. But he had visibility to the leadership team and they knew his name. I didn't get it. It's an important lesson, you have to sell yourself or the work you are doing will go unnoticed.

With visibility comes responsibility. Everyone will come to you to fix their problems. So if you want to be visible, you better walk the talk!
  • Bro, this is the TOP 1 tip. Is sad that they dont teach the importance of this in college. I have many friends who work like crazy, bring value to the company, but they just don't show or dont care to show. If you dont say you did it, dont expect other to say it for you!

1:10 promotion season. 3:00 how the promotion, the designation processes work. 3:15 HR/ people committees set together and evaluate individual employee. 5:50 get designated in the next review cycle 6:15 perception is reality 6:50 perception management in workplace, at some point you need to think about how to manage perceptions of your peers. of your clients. of your supervisors. a very tight relationship between your performance and perception. 8:00 high performer; rockstar. create the significant impact for the organization. -- -- -- 8:45 what can you do to increase the visibility at work? first, strategically think about the interaction: this week and next week. with senior partner and so on... you make that count. you have maybe a certain role in this meeting. if you're politically smart, you can align with team lead: something you can lead and be responsible for. to avoid being a person sitting there not saying anything. 10:20 second, clearly communicate your successes. for example, the weekly one-to-ones. direct supervisor. the result, the impact. 10:50 end of week emails. the highlights: what have been achieved. the lowlights: what you are struggling the next steps: what are next weeks. 11:10 third, engage to activities beyond your day-to-day job, such as team event, team dinner, charity work maybe. which are sponsored by the partners, senior partners in organization. 12:20 fourth, be mindful of how you say things. "we" is not so convincing. your individual contribution to what has happened. 12:40 fifth tip: be close to the headquarter: to board member, to senior leader, to decision makers.

Visibility is important. What is also REALLY important is reminding your boss of your accomplishments and selling yourself in your annual performance review.
  • its not about what work you do, its the work that you are perceived of doing. I have seen many good introverted get burned by this. Meanwhile, the people that do nothing but are seen always get promoted
  • @DarrenLer
Increase communication with senior leaders is one way to more visible in your organisation.

I searched the entire content of this channel and found that this is the only channel with such authentic content. We are very lucky that someone directly from McKinsey or consulting is teaching us their experiences and learnings. There are more than a thousand other channels whose authors have worked in one of the big four consulting firms, but they talk about their lives and jobs, useful only to those who are looking for insight about working within big fours. However, this channel is different. It covers topics from other channels and also teaches us the valuable lessons they learned from working there. So, someone who is not looking for a job in the big four or big six but wants to learn about corporate and business, about their most senior leaders, and how higher systems work can find it all here.
  • @pavelrott311
Priceless lessons from a guy with Arnold Schwarzenegger voice.
  • This is all very good advice, but we all know in order to get the fastest pay increase/rise ... is to work 2-3 years at a firm and jump ship especially at early stages of your career since a wider range of big firms someone worked at, the more impressive it is than working a handful years at one firm, as you can showcase a wide range of knowledge from how multiple firms behave than the depth of 1 firm.
  • Wow! I didn't think about "we" as being a negative. In my current role I think it is obvious I lead things, but I am trying to bring someone else into the team that I want to empower to do what I do. I totally hear you on being close to headquarters and plan to visit there about twice per month in order to stay connected. Doesn't hurt to make that visible as boss's boss feels it is important to visit our location at about the same frequency. It involves a 45 minute to 2.5 hour drive or staying in hotel on my own dime, but worth it. I am a more senior worker, but want to make a significant difference at my company regarding HSE and Sustainability. And I know I can. But only if I remain visible. Thanks so much for your video.

I think you've said everything anyone ever needs to know about consulting: visibility / being loud >>> actual performance. Thanks!!!
  • @robertozenga
This is one of the most valuable and useful videos ever made on this topic. I've ALWAYS wanted to grow in the various companies I've worked in but, maybe due also to this "lack" of visibility, I've never got promoted. Maybe in my next career, once I'll have larned how to properly manage others' perceptions about me, I'll get more chances to get promoted.
  • Hi Heinrich, love the video - having struggled myself with just doing good work and not communicating effectively, I totally agree with you - doing good work is just one part of the equation!
  • @jamezday
Visibility is key but I have seen remote workers get promoted as well, so I think sometimes you can't better yourself because the company structure is opaque or you are not close enough to the people who have the authority
  • @meromo1532
Your content is so underrated. Everyone can really adapt your advices in their own work life. Thanks for your effort. Please keep us updated when you start workshops. You help your community, we help you.
  • @arunkumarvit
Completely agree on the last unpopular opinion.. really liked the video and learnt lot.. perception is reality is the truth in corporate world especially on the shoes of executives and senior leadership.. Thanks for this great content..
  • Thanks heinrich.!! It was a big eye opener for a chronic introvert like me. Keep up the great work work that you do for the community. :-)
