One of the greatest Power anthems in rock history was actually sort of written by this legendary band’s fans! Queen and We Will Rock You was inspired by the band’s fans and the band wanting to include them. The legendary singer/guitar duo of Freddie Mercury and Brian May wrote a song that would unite the masses and It began as live improvisation and even though it has one of the biggest driving beats ever it doesn’t actually contain drums! It’s all natural. once you see this song story you’ll never hear the song the same way again… Finally when Queen was recording it, one of the most infamous bands in history kept interrupting them and their frontman made fun of their Freddie Mercury but he would have the last laugh creating a song that would blow everyone away the story is next.

Queen was on their A Day at the Races Tour in 1977. The tour was going extremely well, as the band continued to elevate their stature to one of the biggest rock bands in the world. With a magnetic and powerful frontman who lit up the stage by the name of Freddie Mercury… Fans that went to see Queen perform on that tour were lively & passionate about the concerts. It was HUGE sold-out tour.

But…there was one particular show that stood out from the rest, at Bingley Hall in Stafford, England, where the audience was so emotionally involved in the performance, the band was completely taken aback. On that magical night inside Bingley Hall... Queen did their encore... and then went off stage. The band was used to the fans cheering after an encore- begging the band to return to the stage and give them more.

But, instead of the usual clamoring, the entire audience began to sing to the band….in unison….”You’ll Never Walk Alone, ”the wondrous Show tune from Rodgers & Hammerstein that was used in the 1956 musical Carousel and adopted as the theme song for sporting teams in Europe & special events throughout the world. The display of affection for the group from the fans singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone" absolutely stunned the 4 band members. From that enthralling experience, lead guitarist & co-founder Brian May & frontman Freddie Mercury knew that it was time to create a song the fans could participate in. A song that would unite the audience, and the band as one.

Overcome by what had happened in Stafford, Freddie & Brian, began to follow the inspiration from the crowd, and they each came up with a song, independent from one another, that would become transcendent sing-a-long anthems. It wasn’t a competition, it was something that two iconic musicians felt compelled to do. They felt it would motivate to reach their end goal.

Freddie came up with “We are the Champions,” and Brian invented “We Will Rock You.” We’ll do a feature soon on “We are the Champions,” but this is about“We Will Rock You.”

Poll: What is your pick for the greatest singer/guitarist duo of all time?

My daughter is 31, she has Down Syndrome and absolutely loves Queen. When she is having anxiety their songs melt away all of her issues. Am so happy I introduced my children to the music I love!❤❤
  • My daughter is 9 and has Down’s syndrome. I was watching this and she was captivated!! Told her I will play the song for her after she gets her pajamas on… she is now in her pajamas harassing me to play it! Never seen her get dressed so fast.

I am 56 and have MS. I am in the midst of having tremors lately and Freddy and the rest of Queen give me power and encouragement. They are the foundation for the underdog. I love them and always will.

Brian May deserves far more recognition as a songwriter than he does. He is one of the greatest.
  • @GlennHamblin
Brian May's guitar is so unique, he can't be mistaken for anyone. He's amazing!

My nephew was singing th3 verses to We Will Rock You when he was exiting his Mom’s car at elementary school, kids were telling him that wasn’t right , he said it was too because his Aunt Carla played the song all the time and he knew that was the right words, love these songs.
  • I got bullied a lot in school and my dad from a very young age would play this song for me. To this day whenever I feel like I am being beat down by life I will play this song and sing it (horribly because I cannot sing) at the top of my lungs and I feel like I can take on the world once more.

Queen really was an amazing band. Every member was so fucking talented. I love that 2 songs that were a playful competition between composers are so often paired together.

First Queen song I heard grabbed me. I was working a job that kept me from music but one day I heard Killer Queen. That was it... I bought every album and attended three of their concerts at the Forum in LA. I am now 74 yrs old and when people walk into my home office I always hear a quiet "wow" for all the pics and memorabilia I have of queen. 3 signed albums and the ceramic Freddie Mercury statue always get comment as well as the poster of Freddie from the memorial concert. Most can't believe that at my age Queen still is foremost in my music collection. All four of them were genius, how could I let them go?

There is never enough or the right words to express what the world had and then lost in Freddie Mercury. He is definitely, unquestionably one of the most talented musician. I loved Queen as a child growing up in the 70s and still love it too this day. I'm always excited to introduce Queen to someone not familiar to their music and not surprised when they are soon a fan.
  • @KatTheNightfox
The first song of Queen's that took over my brain was Another One Bites the Dust. I was 7 years old in 1980, and I don't have too many memories from the time, but I distinctly remember walking back and forth to my best friend's house, singing that at the top of my lungs. Of course I came to love everything Queen's ever did but that's the song that caught me and never let go 😊

Gigging keyboardist musician here. One thing I think that is commonly overlooked about Freddie Mercury is that he was an absolute beast on keys. I dare say he was every bit as good on keys as Brian May was on guitar. I think most people who know about Queen know that Freddie played at least some keys, but the truth is he was an absolute beast on keys, vocals, as well as a brilliant front man. Thanks for showing us gigging keyboardists the way Freddie.
  • @deacoats7359
Freddie Mercury was like music's Nicola Tesla. A soft spoken genius that would blow the minds of anyone. Deeply missed, but never forgotten
  • @iannicholls2798
Sir. Thank you. Finally the story I have told for years has finally been confirmed. I was at the concert at Bingley Hall Stafford on that very night. You'll never walk alone was sung so well, not as a football chant or some throw away thing. It was heartfelt. Thank you for such a great chanel. Keep it coming please.❤
  • @MagicCityGirl
My father is an audio engineer and a huge audiophile. Always the best equipment etc. The first time I played "We Will Rock You" he almost freaked out thinking I had missed the vinyl and was ruining the needle on the turntable. It was such a great feeling to tell him no, just wait!
  • @thatonedude1003
“We Will Rock You” being a seemingly simple song yet having an immense impact and such longevity is a really cool example of irony. It’s about the passion. They did it correctly and it resonated with millions. Such a cool story. Thanks for the info!
  • @kevinc1851
I saw Queen 2 weeks after News of the world was released, I still have the ticket stub for $8.50. Queen opened and closed the show with we will rock you. I consider myself lucky to see them at this point in time when 90% of their classics were released.
  • @vivienclogger
I saw Queen 4 times: Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Wembley and Knebworth. I have seen dozens of big names over the years, but Freddie Mercury held the crowd in his hands like no one before or since. The twin songs of Rock You and Champions were the ultimate encores. Pure magic.
