This Hollow Knight documentary details the development of the indie video game Hollow Knight and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how Ari Gibson and William Pellen became friends and eventually came up with the idea for Hollow Knight while participating in Game Jams together. Afterwards, they quit their jobs and founded their own Indie Studio called Team Cherry. After almost three years of development, the 2D platformer would go on to be a huge success, selling 2.8 million copies as of February 2019. Team Cherry announced a sequel called Silksong in 2019.

The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Team Cherry made and how the game started out as a top-down survival game. It also details how the developers wanted to make Hollow Knight stand out from other Metroidvania games and how challenging it was to balance the game’s difficulty.

EDIT: I made a mistake with the estimated final budget for the game and switched up American dollars for Australian dollars. The final budget came closer to 90,000 USD, not AUD. Someone in the comments pointed it out and I always want to make sure I get all the facts straight, so I wanted to correct it here. What indie game would you like to see me cover next? To top it off, the game is 15 US dollars... The price is outrageous! It needs to be higher!!! Imma buy it again, cause Team Cherry deserves it.
  • @kode-man23
I don't care how long that it takes for Silk Song to come out, because I know that it will be incredible. Team Cherry has earned every bit of good will within the gaming community.

Years of "dude we could have like a uhh-" "F*ck yes that's a great idea"
  • @lynkcrafter8923
I'm surprised you could explain the entire development process with almost no spoilers, with any that do exist being extremely minor, like hornet. Good job

A $60 game cannot give you the same amount of fun that Hollow Knight does. Even though I had to look up a guide for a lot of this game, it’s still so much fun. I can’t wait until Silksong comes out.

Favorite game of all time. I've never felt like I could dive into a world and get lost in it as much as in HK. Such charm, everything seemed so polished. I get the perfect mix of wonder and curiosity. And the free DLCs on top of the already low price for the game just makes me love/respect the game and its devs even more. Amazing to see the team and process behind it. It's so special to me. Thank you for your video, great work.
  • @thomasray
Team Cherry deserves the world... ...and they will easily be able to buy it with all the money we'll throw at Silksong

Seeing the Knight in Hungry Knight is extremely weird after playing Hollow Knight for so long

Damn, this guys weren't just crazy talented. They are also are crazy effective, like how can somebody be that productive?. They managed to polish this game to something beyond my comprehension. My hype for SilkSong, is not only still alive, is an everlasting flame.

“We’re huge fans of small game-breaks that allow players to cheat their way towards victory” Nintendo: I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that
  • Team Cherry is one of the best developers in the entire industry. Hollow Knight is an experience I will never forget

I'm currently playing Hollow Knight on my Switch and I'm so in love with it. And I'm specially in love with the art. I'm learning to draw and I just pend a lot of time drawing Hollow Knight stuff. Great game and great video. You rock!
  • @liam_5748
This is such a well made video. We can see that you know what your talking about and we can see that you spend lots of time editing your videos making them perfect. You also keep the theme of the game in the video which is so amazing. Definitely deserve 1 mil subs
  • @HarukoJisan
Something I appreciate a lot about Hollow Knight's post release content is that it's naturally introduced to you throughout the game. I only played Hollow Knight the first time after all the content was already out, so it was cool to be able check out most of the "new" stuff while going through.
  • @Daemonnoob
"especially zelda 2" damn never thought i would hear that.
