On the genetic level, we're not all that different from chimps. But those small differences in DNA can have massive effects. Learn what makes us truly different from chimpanzees in this new episode of SciShow!

  • Tiny changes can make a big difference: Let's eat grandma vs. Let's eat, grandma
  • @Arikki1
"They are our closest living relatives." Well I have living family, thanks. But I think they're apes too.
  • never underestimate what tiny differences affect on the larger scale. I mean if you take two completely identical vehicles but in one you remove the spark plugs, they're nearly identical but one will start and other won't.
  • @XenoTravis
I had psychosis before. I learned how fast you can just go primal and behave from pure instinct. I hate to say it was a good learning experience because it was absolutely terrifying.
  • @zarblitz
I love this channel because you never shy away from simply saying, "nobody really knows." I think sometimes "science" is presented as all-knowing, but it's not, and that's the point. It's the pursuit of knowledge that illuminates the unknown.
  • @amiebrooks1458
Awkward Bipedal is the way I'm going to explain my clumsiness from now on
  • As a long time technical writer over time at IBM, Intel, and Google I applaud the switch from ALL CAPS (ugh) to sentence case (lower case letters with initial capitals) which research has shown is much easier to read. And it is! Plus, Hank just keeps getting better and better at presenting and the scripts are top notch. Best science channel in the business (which is no mean feat given the quality of the competition). Bravo, signori! :-)

It’s like scishow read my mind, figured out every single thing that I have been wondering about how genes work, and put it all in a video specifically formulated for me. Every single thing in this video is incredibly informative and absolutely mind blowing.
  • Wow. That 11 minutes has 30 minutes of info. What a mouthful. Good on you for a great delivery!
  • @topher_69eze34
I've heard Neil Degrasse Tyson talk on this year's ago, something about that little DNA difference makes a huge overall distinction, also comparing it to say a hypothetical alien more smarter and advanced than us. It was really fun to hear him talk on this
  • @TheoWerewolf
There's one rather hugs difference: chimps have 48 chromosomes and we have 46, suggesting that two pairs of chromosome fused in humans or that a lot of interegene material in u7mans was lost. That means expression will be different even if the actual set of genes are similar.
  • @theursulus
The question that has been in the back of my mind for years is this, 'is our brain complex enough to understand itself' and I suspect it isn't..
  • @Joe_Potts
While we're semi-debunking DNA percent facts, how accurate is the "We share 50% of our DNA with bananas" thing?
  • @FalconFire13
Epigenetics is definitely the future of the field. This is just another example of significant it is to our understanding of ourselves. I can't wait to learn more on this in the upcoming decades.
  • @gusvanskike4889
I think a lot of people glossed over the fact that we can literally GROW BRAINS IN A DISH now!
  • @jojov2000
As a molecular biologist I am amazed by this guy's ability to explain complex systems in terms so understandable that anyone (at least so I assume) can get some level of understanding from it.
  • @Weeeeessel
The new graphical style is really nice! Modernized and more playful while retaining the "SciShow" look and feel, great work.
  • @SegmentW
These are my favorite Scishow videos by far. I love how passionate Hank speaks about this topic. Love the script writers! Great editing, new intro is very easy on the eyes
