From the investigative team behind FRONTLINE’s award-winning “Money, Power & Wall Street,” comes the definitive history of domestic surveillance in a post-9/11 world. In part one of this two part series, FRONTLINE filmmaker Michael Kirk pieces together the secret political history of “The Program,” which began in the wake of Sept. 11 and continues today — even after the revelations of its existence by Edward Snowden.

I love my country but it's becoming increasingly difficult to defend it. We point to China, and trash their surveillance yet our government is no different. The United States I grew up in is dead and gone. Ultimately, the culpability falls with Americans. The average citizen can tell you who won American Idol, the score of last weeks game, and what's trending on Twitter, but can't name any of their constitutional rights, or why protecting them is important.

They ran mass surveillance on the public when in fact the people ordering them to do this are the real ones that need to be watched, they’re the ones with the ability and motive, not the general public

Imagine if Snowden never exposed this we would all still think we had internet privacy
  • @markpfeifer1402
Much respect to those officials who risked it all to fight for our constitutional rights.

When you're born into this world, you're given a ticket to the freak show. If you're born in America you get a front row seat. - George Carlin

This program used to be one of my favorites. This particular episode was produced right at the tail end of when everyone mostly believed that the government was really working for us. Boy did that feeling change as the years went by. And this particular series was also trusted. I would really like to have America back in the hands of the people as it was intended. I guess I really want too much though.

Frontline is far superior than 60 Minutes now and it’s commercial free!

Funny, they're so worried about it going public, but the only person to get burned was Snowden. Nice scapegoat.

Really incisive , powerful and balanced documentary, thank you. Never dreamt there was such soul searching and considered internal dissent which is very encouraging for democracy.

Thank heavens for people that can’t tolerate corruption. They are brave and to be admired.
  • Granting the government more power, more money (taxes), and more authority over our lives is never a temporary proposition. Those in charge will always hold on to that until it becomes 'normal', and then they'll ask for more. This doc is another great example of that
  • This is very significant reporting of a segment of history that many of us lived through. Thank you for posting this coverage. Better late than never for me to learn the story you've exposed so well. ✌️&❤️

I will never forget this. I found out about 911 when I was over seas and I actually got stuck over seas for more than a month. The day of I couldn’t reach my family. My daughter, then a toddler, was with my parents. I had no full knowledge of what was going on. That was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.

It is depressing as hell that honest & good people are punished for telling the damn truth and exposing corruption. Smfh.
  • @Lonesome__Dove
What did I learn from this? The government will violate your rights if they believe it to be in the "best interest" of the country. That really makes the rights pointless.
