On Saturday Jul 13 the Collings Foundation Crew rolled out the last flyable F-4D Phantom in the U.S! We did some pre engine run checks, closed up the radome, serviced the tires, etc. We successfully got engine 2 to start and run with no issues. We developed a leak from a fuel filter on engine 1 and therefore did not run it. We had small hydraulic leak from the right brake line which prompted an engine shutdown. This was an overall major milestone in the goal of getting this bird in the air for the crew, and we hope to have engine 1 turned over soon!

A big thanks to Diesel Thunder for providing alternative angle footage of the startup. Please go to his channel over at Diesel Thunder Aviation for more history on this Phantom.

One flyable F4 left in the US and Greece has over 100 of them. Who would have thought. Tough, capable old dog but wow, what a fuel guzzler, 90 gallons per minute with full afterburner. My brother flew over 200 sorties in one of them during his tours in Vietnam.

My father flew the F-4C with the 45thTFS/15thTFW and the 557thTFS/12thTFW. He was KIA on 3 Sept. 1966 on a combat support mission out of Cam Ranh. I never knew him, but videos like this give me a feel for what he did and who he was.

I see the red star on the intake splitter! This old girl is a Mig Killer!
  • The Phantom is one of the best looking fighters that there ever was in my opinion. It was either the F4 or the F105 (If I recall correctly) that sort of flew with a nose up attitude. Really cool looking. Like low riders in CALI. Many years ago I saw an F4 fuselage being trucked on an 18 wheeler. I don’t think most people realize just how big these planes are. They are more akin to a “two seat large scale business jet” than say a two seat Cessna 152. Cool video. Looks like you’re in Texas with the graphics. Thanks for sharing! Cheers, from Tomball, Texas

I flew many mission over N. Vietnam in an F4 when I was stationed at Cubi Pt, PI in 1967. Well, maybe not exactly true, I was in crash fire at Cubi Pt and one day on my way back to the barracks, I walked by a hangar with an F4 that was in for maintenance. No one was around, so I climbed up the ladder and sat down in the cockpit. I pulled the canopy down so it was almost closed and there I was, on my way to yet another mission over North Vietnam. 😊
  • My uncle was an F 4 driver in Vietnam. And also post war out of Tampa. I was proud of him and service. Still am today.

The unmistakable sound of the J-79 as she spools to 65% and idle. Incremental steps to get the ole gal airborne.

Excellent & rare behind the scenes, gonna be a hit.
  • I have crawled down many an intake looking for loose rivets, check pitot tube, engine blades and leaks. MIL-7808 engine oil services through the aux air doors
  • Baby steps! The Air Force still had WIld Weasel Phantoms in it's inventory when I was a kid. I'd love to see an F105 restored and airworthy.

  • Great Video especially in the Cockpit for us Hobby modeler's!! I served in the last East Cost 80-82 full Phantom deployments on CV-59 in the Med and middle East BS that we're still fighting!! 🤷🏻‍♂️
  • My first base still had F-4's in 1982 in 83 they brought in the F-16😲 I loved them all😁 but man when an F-15 Eagle was on base I forgot all about the others😍🤣
  • It was a great close air support acft , only bad thing it smoked like hell. You could see it for miles.
