In today’s age virality seems to be one’s golden ticket to riches and opportunity. What was once perceived as a place for basement dwelling outcasts, the internet has gone mainstream and virality, a sort of “career goal”. This unusual desire by a new generation has allowed for the rise of platforms that promise a chance of just that, but what is the reality of internet fame? Will it really solve our problems or create more?

The montage of all the viral moments just feels like an epic fever dream through time and space; like I just died and my entire internet journey is flashing through my eyes.

Someone commented they prefered viral back then and so do I. I think it has to do with the fact that back then it was completely unintentional and it became viral just because people liked it nowadays most people will try to get their videos viral so it's more or less natural!

Bo Burnham is personally one of my favorite examples of rise to fame. He started on YouTube, rose to fame, and now stepped out of the spotlight, criticizing the very thing that allowed him to reach fame.

I feel sorry for a lot of viral tik tokers. Many times people steal their audio or ideas or challenges or dances, and never credit the creator. A viral trend becomes a game of telephone, and the creator is left in the dust. Even IF people know the creator, many times they won’t get support when trying to capitalize off it.

Damn, that intro was 🔥

I want my business to go viral not me personally which is why I’m not the face of my brand. I made my personal account private because I wanted to separate my personal account from my business account. One of my tweets regarding my business once got a lot of attention on Twitter and I wasn’t prepared for the hate I got. I deleted my Twitter shortly after. As a small business owner, you have to be prepared for the good and bad and be very careful what you say and who you do business with.

I love the idea that what we want from "numbers" is actually connections. It resonates with some of how I feel about sometimes wanting to create content (I actually just want to find my tribe). It also explains to me that when a friend complains about "lack of engagement" for a tweet or something, it's not because they're sad they're not getting famous, it's because they want friends.

Virality is such a mystery to me. Just like love

Imagine getting a heart from Psych IRL 😳

i know this is a serious video but the intro brought back memories i forgot i had

Considering TikTok was once Musicly and another app I can't remember, I think it is safe to say that TikTok only finally blew up because of the pandemic because we all were bored.

I deleted all of my social media besides YouTube ~4 years ago. Stuff like this makes me so happy for my self esteem
-
Viral then was better than viral now. I liked it back then. Nowadays it just feels different..
-
I liked how you used Maslows hierarchy to explain our needs and how social media fulfills these needs.

I seriously love when you post. Introspective, well researched and composed videos. Thank you for such quality!!
-
Donna, one day I’ll see one of your videos in a lecture hall. Thank you for making monumental recollections of history in the making. It’s really well done.

I think virality is a lot like camp: the most satisfying and best examples is not intentional. Brittany Broski wasn’t trying to make a viral video, Miss Keisha being fucking dead wasn’t intended to blow up, etc. We love when something funny happens on accident, and in the case of corporate ads trying to spark viral content, I feel like we actually have an aversion for people trying to hard to go famous. Cringe, camp, and virality is so interesting and I loved the video!!!

You are one of the rare channels where I watch every video from beginning to end ... Thanks a lot for all the comprehensive work you provide! ✌️
