  • I remember when Ray brought this rough mix to our management office. We were both managed by David Krebs and Paul Oneill at the time. Ray played us a few of the new songs from this record. The first anyone had ever heard them. I still have that cassette that Ray gave me! We were good friends even before he got the Sabbath gig. He went to play this song and looks at David who was in his sunglasses on his couch and said “You will really like this one it is Very Black Sabbath. “ David paused and sarcastically said “That’s important Ray, when you are doing a Black Sabbath record!” 🤣🤣😇🙏

You can certainly hear RJD's influence on Ray's interpretation of this melody line. Especially in the lower register vibrato. It is so classy for them to release these demos and let people hear Ray in his early days.

Bob Daisley's bass is phenomenal on this track. The man's one beast of a talent!
  • I don't care who you are, if you don't love the late Ray Gillen's voice there's something wrong with you. He had the most awesome, angelic, operatic voice in music history! He was a true legend! RIP!

The late, great, Ray Gillen…that voice…WOW
  • @Belseful
Ray Gillen was absolutely one of a kind....damn he could sing...

Ray was truly amazing. He is sadly missed. He could have been a legend.
  • It's worth getting the deluxe expanded edition of The Eternal Idol just to get the bonus disc of the original album cut with Ray Gillen.

This version is so much more haunting than the original. Holy shit! Amazing. And by no means am I dismissing Tony Martin's work. This is just incredible.
  • He has. The Deluxe Edition of The Eternal Idol has the Ray Gillen mix on the second disc. You should definitely go and buy it, support the non-Ozzy albums so they'll be sure to give the rest of the Martin albums deluxe treatment.
  • Ray was a friend of mine back in the early 80s , he's the father of my dear friends daughter, Ashley, who looks just like him RIP RAY
  • It's nice to see Sabbath giving Ray Gillen some recognition by releasing these demos on the deluxe set of this album.

ray gillen was incredible on this.. it would have been epic if they got along and he stayed awhile
  • Ray was the reason that this is the best post Dio record. When Tony Martin re-recorded the vocal tracks, he kept Ray's melodies and most of the lyrics. Both great singers of course.

The Shining is one of my favorite Sabbath songs from this era. I can’t hear it without thinking of Tony Martin’s version though. I’m glad I got to hear Ray’s version.

I saw this band in 1986. Probably the best singer they ever had, My favourite incarnation of the band, and My favourite Black Sabbath song.

This version with Ray is a top 5 best Sabbath songs of all time. Flawless.

So haunting and angelic, he was amazing and it saddens me that he's no longer gracing this world with his voice, RIP Ray Gillen.
