Whether they’re bright yellow flowers or seeding puffballs, dandelions are some tough weeds that will steal nutrients, water, and sunlight from your grass, and they’ll grow back if they’re not properly removed.

Dandelions germinate in spring and can grow to be between 2 and 18 inches tall. The leaves grow in a rosette arrangement, and they have a jagged shape, with the lobes pointing towards the center of the plant. Multiple stems can grow from the same plant, with a single, yellow flowering head growing at the end of each stem. When it’s ready to reproduce, the flower becomes a white puffball of seeds, that can easily be blown and carried by the wind.

When inspecting your lawn for dandelion activity, look out for their yellow flowers and leaf arrangements. Dandelions will grow just about anywhere, in most types of soil. They’ll grow more in areas that see plenty of sunlight, but are also known to get by in the shade. Note where you’re seeing activity so you know where to focus your treatment.

Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, especially when handling any chemicals. And remember, keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry.

An effective way to keep dandelions and other weeds at bay is to keep your lawn green and healthy while simultaneously treating any existing weeds that have been established. Use Solutions Weed & Feed. Our Weed & Feed is a special blend that contains 15-5-10 fertilizer and the herbicide Trimec. These products work to effectively kill stubborn weeds while safely feeding your turf grass.

If you see dandelions re-establish themselves after several weeks, you can treat individual dandelions with a post-emergent like TopShot. Since TopShot is also a selective herbicide, it can be applied on to certain turf types to kill weeds without harming the grass.

The best way to prevent dandelions from growing on residential turf is to keep it growing thick and healthy. Regular lawn maintenance and good cultural practices will keep your grass green and leave no room for weeds. When mowing your lawn, do so without a mowing bag. The grass clippings will be evenly distributed, and provide your grass with additional nutrients. Make sure you mow your grass to the proper height of 3 to 4 inches. Keep up with proper fertilizer applications, even during fall. Finally, be sure to water the grass deeply once or twice a week, rather than a little everyday.

Pick them and send them to 50 greenpost lane Warwick ri 💜they are amazing for you
  • When the dandelions turn white and have those leaves that “fly” and “spread” potentially more weeds/dandelions, would I be creating more problems if I “don’t” use my bag/grass catchers? I realize the mulch would help but just wonder if I’m spreading the problem. Thx

They're pests? I live in Bali and this plant is favorite amongst Balinese. Nurseries always run out. I guess Someone's trash is another someone's gem.
  • @pear92
“Identify and locate the dandelions” ...almost my whole lawn because the previous homeowner didn’t give a shit. 🙃 (Would probably be easier to just rip the lawn out and start from scratch at this point.)
  • @Paul-dy8mo
Where critters rip away at weeds piece by piece for a meal they leave the root in the ground and the result is not so many weeds. So I just tear the tops off one leaf and stem at a time and drop them right there. A natural lawn will compost them fast, the worms love them. Every year I have less weeds AND a better turf since I learned this.

Why would anyone get rid of dandelions they're so pretty in Spring time and have lots of health benefits if you know how to use them
  • It has only been recently that people started calling dandelions weeds. They are not technically or categorically classified as weeds. They are extremely good for your lawn. Good for your health and multitudously useful..but hey it's your lawn.
