Catherine reviews the options for getting rid of dandelions in your grass and lawn, including weed and feed fertilizer, hand weeding with a soil knife, traditional lawn weed killer, and iron HEDTA weed control products. She reviews the pros and cons of each method, and describes in detail how iron HEDTA kills dandelions without injuring your lawn. Iron HEDTA is a soluble form of iron, so it's an organic, natural method to kill dandelions that is much safer and effective than using household or concentrated vinegar to kill weeds. If you've ever wonder how to safely get rid of dandelions in your lawn, this video will help you decide the right method for you.

  • For those of us who don’t like dandelions, thanks for an informative video!!

I have a large and beautiful cottage garden that I have created. It's brought in a ton of bees. But I don't enjoy the dandelions that create a mess in my grass, they take over EVERYTHING. They have seeped into every beautiful ground cover and flower I've planted. I've never noticed many bees on them, the bees much prefer my luscious flowers and fruit/vegetable garden.
Thank you for creating a video with "friendly" ways of taking care of the dandelions that seem to want to take over my labor intensive garden!

Fantastically helpful video! I especially appreciate your ability to quickly yet thoroughly disseminate the info. Thank you so much for sharing! 😊
  • You are a great teacher. You were very informative and avoided using filler words. You knew where you were going and got there without unnecessary delays. One question, if I were to make a mix of 50-50, horticulture vinegar with regular white vinegar would it be strong enough to eliminate a dandelion?

Here in Canada they outlawed pesticides yrs ago. I have a 1 acre lot and have lost the battle with them. So I let them grow. If sombody wants to pick them to eat then drop by, you can’t miss my house, it’s probably the only house that has thousands of dandelions on the street. I bet my neighbors hate me.

I actually found normal vinegar to work pretty well, although I painted it on the leaves with a brush, rather than spraying.

Well this popped up and I had to make a comment about leaving the dandelions alone for the bees, looks like I'm not alone in my thinking!!
They really are very good for the soil, have a look into what they do to help the soil.

thx for responding Catherine. No disrespect but you r attractive. The iron HEDTA did kill the weeds and the dandelions. I don't believe it killed my bermudagrass but I'm still monitoring it. Gotta subscribe to your channel. Whenever you get the opportunity would like to see how your lawn looks. Do you use preemergent? If so which brand do you recommend? Respond at your convenience. thanks again for the advice.

I remove the ones in the front of my house, you know, the part people get all judgy about. I have never used herbicides, using a great tool l have. I remove the heads compost the rest. I remove them from my beds in the back, but leave the dandies and wild violet in the grass for the pollinators. I also grow bird and butterfly gardens, so l am trying to do my part.
  • Hey everyone, to clarify, bees have plenty of food sources in my yard. I grow a wide variety of trees, shrubs and flowers that bloom from the beginning of the growing season to the first fall frost to support pollinators. While dandelions are a non-native plant in the area where I live, it's great to see so many people interested in supporting ecosystem health and embracing the natural environment. In my perspective, responsibly managing weeds with the safest alternatives is an important part of caring for the land.

Dandelions are my favorite flowers. Every year I buy a large bag of dandelion seeds and I sow them everywhere. The bees love me this, but for some reason no one else likes it.
  • Thank for the information. This tip is so great. I hate to have dandelion in my yard they are weeds invasive dirty looking
  • @bettyboop1524
This is terrific information. I've never heard about using Iron to get rid of dandelions. I am definitely going to try it, there seem to be an awful lot of these things growing this year.
  • @linus0804
Why the heck would you want to get rid of them? So pretty and so beneficial
  • What I need
is the dandelion in the spring.
    The bright yellow flower
    that means rebirth
    instead of destruction.
The promise that life can go on
no matter how bad our losses.
That it can be good again.

Dandelions are a wonderful spring tonic, can be used for salads, the petals make wine and the buds can be pickled like capers if you collect them before they open. They are a great source for pollinators and a plant that has many benefits. The problem is the lawn, not the dandelions. But if you feel the need to control them, dig them out. Poisons in your yard affect everything, kill plants you call weeds and also pollinators. So go with the soluble iron. Good information here for humans who think they need to rule the world. Skip the poisons, join the living world!
  • I am so heartened to read the "leave the dandelions alone" responses here. The question is indeed 'why' ? Ask yourself that quesion every day. Every action we make has a consequence, that's our power. We're just overdoing it. A field of dandelions is beauty and nature's power all in one.
  • @thomasm195
Dandelions bring calcium up to the surface of your soils and the tap root also breaks up compacted soils, if dandelions are present they are solving these issues for free.
