How Should We Then Live? - Gary DeMar (2023 Conference)

Published 2023-05-04
The Bible is more than a book about individual redemption. It serves as the foundation to the answer this question: "How should we then live?" What does the Bible say about the Christian's role in society and culture for all new creatures in Christ? We're not only saved from something, but we are saved for something. Does that "something" only apply to life after death? Does the Bible have anything specific to say about how the world should function? Should Christians develop a comprehensive biblical worldview and apply it to the world? What does the Bible say and what does history say?

This lecture was presented at the 2023 Spring Bible Conference held by Berean Bible Church each year in late April. Keep an eye on our main website for details, and/or sign up to our mailing list to get updates when the conference gets close.

Great message! And may we adopt this mindset going forward!
  • God led me on a journey out of dispensational eschatology to Truth through reading your works and the works of David Chilton, Rushdooney, and most importantly through studying the Bible, not as a prediction for the 21st century but as an account of what had taken place in God's dealing with Israel in the Old Testament days, and what the people living in the New Testament days, who heard the words of Jesus and the apostles, should prepare for in THEIR future. I pray that many more will be delivered as I was. To God be all glory!!!!

So wait until about 500 years after I'm dead and everything will get better 👍
  • Very much appreciate Gary DeMar and his scholarship, particularly his eschatological scholarship. But this evening, when Gary made the simple point that it doesn't take much to overcome evil, just faithfulness, I had to stop watching so as not to lose track of these beautiful words on which to meditate. Do we want to overcome evil? Do I want to overcome evil? The answer is simple: just be faithful. Thank you, Gary!
  • We are not of this world sir ! Only God can change us . This world is not following Christ they follow the lies and who is the truth ? It's the spirit of the living ones. Our mission is not to change the world but to spread the gospel to the world, this is the only way given by God to changes some of them, all are not destine to eternal life. Merci. Ps : a-mill is a great way to understand eschatology also.

Warp and weft/woof is the term referring to the vertical and horizontal crossing of threads that make up the fabric being weaved.
  • In my early years, eschatology was never far from my controlling paradigm. Then I had to survive in my world, so an element of pragmatism stepped in. How I perceived the impending doom influenced everything until I aged and now, too late. Wrong eschatology may not be the most important thing (believing in the name of Jesus/Yeshua surely is), it will control your life if you REALLY believe your very next day is totally unsure. I don't know how one escapes this and if you are unlucky enough to be raised in a dispensational church - just rotten luck.
  • In this lecture, Gary DeMar outlined a lot of great information regarding how we should be developing and living within a Christian worldview. As I listened, I could not help but ponder some of our difference of perspective regarding the primary problems we see within society. Now, while I surely agree that as the people of God (the Church) live in a land, that land should increase in blessing and Godliness, by the influence of the Christians and the will of God (see, Jeremiah chapter 29). However, in 1st Peter 4:17 we read that “judgement begins with the house of God”. Therefore, I believe whatever God is going to affect on the ‘world-stage’, it will begin with His Church seeing reformation and revival. This is why I believe so strongly in the ‘power of Preterism’. Judgement, while often used to depict negative and condemning of things, is also a term regarding the ordinances and regulations of something. God’s people must property understand the Kingdom Gospel we are preaching. As Gary very well noted, “We have to give people a Biblical reason as to why they need to be engaged in changing the culture”. While affecting national governments, economies, social work, etc, the primary thing is that the Church needs to appropriately discern what it means to ‘proclaim the presence and purpose of God’ (i.e., Full Preterism).

I think I heard Demar say he is Calvinist. Whenever the word predestined is used in the NT it is in context of first fruits/ "we who were the first to put our faith in Christ". It was the first century AD apostles/Christians. As a preterist this should be pretty easy for you all to accept unless the sin of pride/greed is your master which it seems to be for a lot of Calvinists. So you are not elect or predestined.
