For nearly a century, Hollywood has captivated and influenced generation after generation of moviegoers. Its magic has left an indelible imprint on every culture with a movie projector. Originally broadcast on PBS, HBO/Cinemax, TNT, A&E, Lifetime, and Bravo, this is one of the most comprehensive collections of biographies and cinema retrospectives ever compiled, a spectacular treasury of 32 revealing biographies of Hollywood’s most beloved stars. These biographies, some narrated by the stars themselves, include interviews with friends, family members and colleagues, as well as clips from their most memorable films, and in some cases, rare home movies.

“Over 350 actors, writers, directors, producers, make-up people, publicists, agents, and family members all gave of themselves to help make these shows possible. This was the way it was in Hollywood in its classic era and these were the stars that captured us.” – Gene Feldman, producer/director of The Hollywood Collection.

I had the great pleasure of working with Robert Mitchum as an actor, near the end of his career and he was a joy to behold. Calm, thoughtful and a complete natural. A real genuine human being. They don't make leading men like him anymore..

Someone once said how intelligent he was, but when you have nothing to back it up with, no one takes that side of you seriously. Most underrated actor ever, a face which held so many secrets.

What a guy. He never forgot where he came from; so modest. A great actor too.

Very handsome & talented actor. My dad had " Robert Mitchum eyes". He grew up poor during the depression, too. ( He died on July 1st, (1956,) same day as Mitchum.July 1)

My dad had a drink with Mitchum in the early 50s. Dad was sitting in a bar in Bossier City, Louisiana when Mitch walked in. A couple of drunks recognized him and started some s#$t. Mitchum knocked out both of them and bought dad a drink. I think Cape Fear was his best performance.

He died 23 years ago today and left a hole in films that can never never be filled. There was no one like him on the screen and never will be. What an actor he was! What a man he was! Never won a Oscar! Good! So many GREAT actors have never won Oscars. He is class company. Thank you Mitch for all the joy you gave and continue to give in the films you left behind.

When I saw Robert Mitchum in Isla Mujeres Mexico the early 1980s, on a rock, far from everywhere then, I was starstruck. Of course said you’re RM! He put his hand over his face like Give Me A Break. His wife came up and was so kind to me. Lovely woman

His Night of the Hunter is still, to my mind, one of them most frightening and best done terror movies to this day. What modern directors try to do with props, Mitchum did with sheer presence.

Robert Mitchum is realistic, subtle, and understated in Friends of Eddie Coyle, perhaps my favorite of his performances (another favorite is Track of the Cat).
