Taiwan will enter a new era on Monday, as President Tsai ying-Wen hands over power.

She's served two terms in office. And in that time, she has faced growing pressure from Beijing, which sees the self-governing island as a breakaway province.

The Chinese President, Xi Jinping, has said that what he calls 'reunification' must be fulfilled, and Taiwan has effectively become more dependent on support from the US to ensure it continues to self-govern.

Our correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes has been to meet President Tsai, and ask her about her legacy.

As a Taiwanese senior high school student, I'm grateful for her efforts to make Taiwan more helpful and important to the globe. The status quo may didn't change significantly, but even maintain itself is by no means an easy thing.

President Tsai definitely made aware to the world that this beautiful country exists and it does great things to the world. Taiwan holds the insurmountable position in technology. It situates in the critical geopolitical location. We also see its people having the advanced understanding of democracy, freedom, individuality and kindness.
