In this restored footage of "James Taylor In Concert," James performs @TheCaroleKing's classic song, "You've Got a Friend" on the popular @BBC series "In Concert" on November 13, 1971. James is joined by Carole King on piano, Leland Sklar on bass and Russ Kunkel on percussion.

In 1971, Carole released her album "Tapestry" and James released "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon." "You've Got a Friend" appeared on both albums and James's single of the song reached #1 on the Billboard 100 and #4 on the UK Singles Chart. Both albums won Grammy Awards for the song (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Song of the Year). Carole has said that she wrote "You've Got a Friend" in response to this lyric in James's song "Fire and Rain": "I've seen lonely times when i could not find a friend".

"In Concert" was produced by the BBC in the early '70s and featured performances from legendary acts of the time.

LYRICS
You've Got a Friend - by Carole King

When you’re down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing
Oh, nothing is going right

Just close your eyes and think of me
Yes, and soon I will be there
To brighten up
Oh, even your darkest nights

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running
To see you again

It’s winter, spring, summer or fall
Now all you got to do is call on me
And I will be there, yeah, yes, I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend

If the sky high above you
Should grow dark and full of clouds
And that old cold north wind
Should begin to blow

Just keep your poor head together now
And call my name out loud, you know
Pretty soon
I’ll be knocking on your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running
To see you again
It’s winter, spring summer or fall
Really, all you got to do is call
And I’ll be there
You know I’ll be there

Oh, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend
When people can be so cold
They’ll hurt you, yes, and desert you
Well, they’ll take your soul if you let them
But don’t you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running like as fast as I can
To see you again

Oh, yes, don’t you know about that

Winter, spring, summer or fall
Oh, all you’ve got to do is call
And I will be there
Yeah, yes, I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend
You’ve got a friend
Ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend
Walking and talking and everything friend
Well, I said everybody here tonight in Pittsfield
No matter how low you may go sometimes
Ought to take some consolation in one thing, oh, yeah
Ain’t it good to know
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You’ve got a friend

How humble is Carole ....she wrote the song ,but lets her friend James take the credit . James had been going through crisis with his addiction. She offered him the song to cover and release before she released it on her album! He got the accolades .....Now ain't that a friend ...? 💖

Watching Carole play piano in the background makes this. Such an amazing song.

This was 50 years ago and I still love it. I lost my husband in April... we had been married 51 years. He too was my best friend~
  • A message to you James Taylor: your songs are not just music, they are part of us, they are part of our lives. We thank you for everything you have done. Thanks.
  • I recently lost my son who was not only my son but my best friend. We used to turn this song on in the car and both of us would sing this song to the top of our lung's. He would say mom you know you always have a friend in me. We played this song at his funeral. I miss him so much!! I know he is with Jesus now.
  • A man and a woman playing their instruments, and the only technology involved is to record the song, that folks is what talent looks like. ❤

I just read you. My partner of 35 years together left in December 2022. He was everything to me and my best friend. Very big emotion. I feel like he guided me on this song. In 1971, he was in the United States and Canada.

My uncle was a Catholic priest from Liverpool. His funeral was last week. This was the song they played as we carried him out of the church. I will now, forever, have a special place for this song. There were 2000 people singing this in unison.

Little did the both of them know how influential they would be in the history of music

52 years later all four musicians on this are still with us. How rock and roll is that?

So beautiful. Carole King and James Taylor are truly friends. She gave this song to her Friend because she loved her friend. James Taylor took us to another level with his recording of this beautiful song. I love them both. Carole King and James Taylor have been so important to me with their meaningful music and message. I’m 65 years old. Thank you both for helping me through the years.❤️

One of the greatest songs I've ever heard. It always comforts me.
  • The entire 'Tapestry' album (songs of Carole King) was just one of the best collections of songs in the entire world.
  • I remember my ex wife singing this to our not yet born child at bedtime. Then she was born, Robina, and momma still sung it to her at bedtime. I would listen downstairs and hope I would never forget such a memory. What a blessing. ❤️

Technology has ruined everything... It will never be like this again. But at least I was along for the ride. And for that I couldn't be more grateful. 🎼🎶🎼
