Beginner’s Guide to Overseeding | DO’s and DONT’s

Published 2023-08-29
This video is very simple.

If you want to be successful at overseeding, you need to follow these easy steps....

1. Mow Low
Mowing low before overseeding is a crucial step in ensuring the success of a new grass seed application. By cutting the existing grass to a shorter height, typically around 1-2 inches, you create several advantages for the overseeding process. It reduces competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients, and increases seed to soil contact allowing the newly sown seeds to establish themselves more effectively.

2. Dethatch
Dethatching before overseeding is a critical preparatory step in achieving a thriving and resilient lawn. Thatch, which is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that accumulates on the soil surface, can impede the success of overseeding in several ways. By removing this dense barrier, overseed can make better contact with the soil, ensuring optimal seed-to-soil contact for germination.

3. Choosing the right seed
Selecting the right grass seed is a pivotal decision when it comes to overseeding, as it directly influences the outcome of your lawn. Different grass species and varieties possess varying characteristics, such as color, shade tolerance, drought resistance, and durability, which can impact the overall performance and aesthetics of your lawn.

4. Starter fertilizer
Applying a starter fertilizer during overseeding is a crucial practice for jumpstarting the growth and establishment of newly sown grass seeds. Starter fertilizers typically contain a higher concentration of phosphorus, a nutrient essential for root development and early plant growth. By providing this nutrient boost at the time of overseeding, you enhance the chances of rapid and robust germination.

5. Weed Preventer
Applying mesotrione when overseeding can be a valuable practice to prevent unwanted weed competition and ensure the success of your new grass seeds. Mesotrione is a selective herbicide that targets broadleaf weeds and certain grassy weeds while sparing most established grass varieties. By using mesotrione before overseeding, you can effectively eliminate existing and future weed growth.

6. Watering
Watering after overseeding is of paramount importance to support the successful germination and growth of newly sown grass seeds. Adequate moisture is a fundamental requirement for seed germination, and without it, even the most carefully chosen grass seed won't flourish. Consistent and gentle watering keeps the soil consistently damp, allowing the seeds to swell and sprout.

I truly wish people understood how much time and effort goes into a video like this. Well done bro. Turned out great!
  • @tyork1994
Between you and Ryan Knorr, my first overseeding project was successful! My contractors that built my house put some crap sod down and killed most of it. Now mine is nice and green! If you want something done, do it yourself (with the help of this channel)
  • @TheLawnMentor
Banger video George! Now’s the time to transform the lawn!
  • @benharrison5816
I've had the Sun Joe dethatcher and Groundskeeper II rake for a couple years now and they're game changers. Always amazed at how much dead material they pull up, and satisfying af haha.
  • @gman3413
Great video, George! I overseeded the last 2 years. Thought it was super effective to use a blower after dethatching instead of raking. Sharply angling it down towards the ground really exposed a lot of soil. Also, watering lightly before rolling seemed to help make the rolling more effective.
  • @furonable
Thank you so much, I'm about to overseed my lawn and I feel confident after watching your videos.

This channel is amazing. I won’t overseed due to having Bermuda but I watched this anyways due to how quality this channel is. Thank you!

Great video! You speak very clear and easy to understand. Here in southern PA we are so dry right now struggling to get any rain, I want to over seed but temps in the 90’s coming next week😝 ready though hope we can salvage a bit in the fall…
  • @lenchowmein

Thanks for all your help George- your vid's along with some of the other lawn YouTubers - I had seedlings doing first emergence after just 4 days (about 1/8") , and the green haze after days 5-6. That's with the RK KBG PRG mix. May need to give the TTTF a shot in the backyard next season..plan is 20x20 squares all summer long with straw blankets.
