Lyrics:

You sit me down
To explain
All the trials you've endured
Around and around
The refrain
Rings the same each time it's heard
Entertain the notion
Entertain the notion
That the only thing I hear
Is the crack of a smile
In a face
That ain't so sincere

When I'm measuring out your quality
It is only as deep as your modesty
As your insides fall to pieces
Shattered by the silent treatment
Things are only fragile 'til they break
Feigning your humility
It only serves to weaken the
Most common observations that you make
Drown me out in conversation
Surf a wave of provocation
Wash away my interest in your wake

I think you can
Reach a place
Where the impetus is pure
You'll understand
A disgrace
Is the thing that makes us feel
Level on the inside
Level on this outside
I'm content to know it
Level on the inside (level on the outside)
Level on the outside
I don't need to show it

Something about 90's guitar distortion...it just feels good.

2021 and this track is as fresh as ever. Fantastic stuff. Can't beat 90's alternative.

The late nights hearing these guys play growing up. Underrated beyond belief.

One of the best songs ever made. Just has a feeling of it's own.

Absolutely one of the best examples of great music of the 90's, which sadly is seemingly 'backshelved' these days. Wish I could just call-up my local alternative station and request it an they'd say, "hellz yeah! haven't played that in furrevahh!!

They played this all the time on 105.7 the Point in St. Louis. Led me to buy the album, which is excellent.

Jeezus, the memories....the summer of 98 was one of the most epic summers of my life, and this was like the capstone song of its soundtrack....Damn, I miss you Chicago.

Haven't heard this in years. For some reason it popped in my head today at work. Was very surprised how many words I remembered!

A band I was in opened up for DJ in 2000 at Elbo Rm in Chicago. Probably one of the best shows we ever did.

Awesome you mentioned that...Black Lab and Oleander is still around surprizingly. I'm rediscovering other similar groups like Collapsis, Athenaeum, For Love Not Lisa...and yes! I thought Splender and DTJ would never fall into obscurity! Back in high school, People were talkin about them though.
  • @Copaceticness
They used to play this all the time on 105.9 the Lazer (Lawrence, Kansas), which I still miss.
  • @ragetobe
Such a long time since I heard this, they were never as big as they should have been!
