Landlocked Town in Northern British Columbia, With A Small Population of Thriving Residents.

Published 2024-08-03
Although my focus on Destination Adventure is Remote Travel, meeting fascinating people is what I enjoy the most. I have had some great characters on this show, and this week is no exception. I met Amelie, shortly after arriving to town, when we went into Kershaws Cafe to grab a coffee. The energy in that little cafe was so alive, you can't help but feel like you are welcomed into someones home. Working in a Cafe can be a lot of fun, but it isn't the type of job most are thrilled to wake up for, but that was clearly not the case at Kershaws. We placed our orders, and while they got busy fixing some tasty drinks I got busy asking questions. Soon the puzzle pieces came together as Amelie explained to me how she had recently purchased Kershaws Cafe. We shared some great conversations, and it was an easy decision to explain why I was in town and ask if she would like to get involved in the project. It was an excited yes, and phase one of the Atlin Project was under way. We had arranged the interview for three days later, and it was a delight getting to come back and learn more of their story. Atlin is not the kind of place I expected to find a young woman pursuing a business such as this, but her passion for the project seems to draw in customers with ease. With such a small population, it takes a strong community to make any business successful, and the people of Atlin are behind each other all the way. For example, Amelie was quite excited to tell me about the coffee that is made specific for Kershaws, because it is made by another company in town, Atlin Mountain Coffee Roasters. She told me about their off grid lifestyle and their completely off grid coffee roasting operation. And just like that, my story had turned into two.

It was obvious right away that I needed to try and arrange a meeting with the Coffee Company, but before I even had time to track them down, my inbox notified me of a special surprise, and invitation from Atlin Mountain Coffee Roasters. I arrived up with no expectations, which is good because if I had any, they would have been blown out of the water. The home, lifestyle and business ran by the Brient family, is only achievable by someone with a tremendous amount of dedication and talent. To live off grid, you have to be very creative in as many ways as possible. How to heat, how to cool, how to get and store water, how to generate and store electricity, the list goes on and on. But to find a way to run a business off grid as well, is a winning combination few can ever achieve. Roasting Coffee, is a business I had never even though into, so getting to learn about it first hand was a great experience. For something that many of us drink daily, and without even consideration, there is a lot of steps in the process prior to the cup. Roasting is one of the final stages, but certainly one of the most important. The way the coffee is roasted greatly determines the flavour, the colour, and the quality. Like most thing cooked over a fire, fire roasted coffee is just better. It may require more work, and a close eye, but Philippe can roast batch after batch to absolute perfection, like a well oiled machine. The Brient family was incredibly accommodating, helping with all I needed for my video project, as well as helping with some future adventure plans in the area.

Big thank you to both Amelie and the Brient family for helping make this video possible.

  • The way Emily discribes the reason she never left Atlin absolutely brought tears to my eyes. This sounds like a heaven on earth ❤❤❤❤
  • This woman is like breath of fresh air. She young, beautiful, excited about life. Her story is amazing and inspirational.
  • You nailed it with this video. While everyone else is doing "look at me" content, you've allowed the very people who make up the town, tell us in their own words why they love this little corner of the earth they have chosen to call home. Amazing work!

Just putting in my 2 cents to help the algorithm, right? You, Dustin, have a knack for finding beautiful people with amazing stories and then putting it all together for your viewers. This episode is easily in my top 10 of your output.

  • Oh wow, I used to live in Watson Lake,Yukon, go visit Atlin, I loved it there, things are changed now, as it's been 35 years, thanks for the memories

Man Dustin. You hit it out of the park with this one! Amazing interviews. Love to see residents that are proud of where they live and look after what was left for them to take care of. She really cares about what she does and the town it self as well as its heritage. I’m not a coffee drinker but the entire process was cool. I’m sure it has to smell great there in the morning.

Your decision to go way up north this year was the best. Finding these communities and the people and the stories is what makes you and this channel so special. Thank you for all of this.
  • Thanks for having some coffee with me this morning. Another great adventure and another place we would never get to enjoy without you going there. Keep up the great work, I look forward to next weekend.

I enjoy every episode, but this one was special! It was really interesting to hear the residents story in their own words, and their enthusiasm for their vocation, life, and where they live was infectious. As usual, beautiful scenery and your commentary was great! Keep up the good work!

Awesome episode......Atlin is one of the coolest places I have ever visited. Spent a year cruising the Yukon and went to Atlin a few times. It's one of those places you can't get enough of. Your episode brings back many memories from my travels in 2017-18. I forget the name of the lady that owned the yellow and red aircraft(Citabria) on floats at the beginning and she took a pic of me standing on one of the floats. Another memory I have was of an old jewellery store with a huge watch mounted on a pole out front. There was also a bakery that made some of the most yummiest goodies I've ever eaten. I hope on your way back you can do a story on the history of Carcross YT, also a very interesting place with tons of history. Thanks Dustin, I always look forward to Saturday morning coffee while watching Destination Adventure. Looking forward to next Sundays episode. Cheers and have a safe journey!

What a beautiful place to visit and the charming people living there. Thank you for taking us with you.
  • She's so bubbly and full of life, while she speaks it's like all the problems going on around us are gone for a moment. I wish I could have her outlook on life.
  • The people you encounter are as unique as you and your channel . As a long time viewer it baffles me how you continue to create such amazing content week after week . Keep it up bud you are destined for greatness . And thanks for taking us along .
  • @Robert-gs6cr
I once read that the people who live at the end of the road are always interesting because they never really fit in elsewhere and they came there and the road ended so they stayed
  • She's such a breath of fresh air 😀 smile & enthusiasm 💯
  • @asinfysh6973
Dustin, we enjoy watching your videos because they are so different from where we live in Australia. Amelia is a delightful person with the talent of encouraging us to visit. The coffee roaster’s whiskey coffee would be especially lovely in the coffee I drink—cold-brewed coffee.

Many thanks to make us discover this nice place.
