David GREAT VIDEO. I inspected both hives at 12 noon today, it was 75 degrees and nice South breeze. Added a deep box with drawn comb in-between the 2 deep box to give the bees more room and the bottom super was full of honey but not totally capped. So, hopefully with the expected heat the hives will be able to handle the heat. Water stream about 50 ft away with plenty of fresh spring water. So far no mites ! HAVE A GREAT DAY AND FATHER'S DAY 👍 😎
  • That's why it's a great idea to keep bees in insulated horizontal hives(Layens)😁
  • Hi Dave, I have been doing bees for 18 years, my dad years before me. I came up with the idea of using my bee excluders as spacers, between the inner cover and outer cover. The bees are able to go in and out still because of the openings on the excluders. It was enough to help vent air out the top, and reduced the bearding by 1/2 the amount.
  • This is why European gothic churches are cool in the summer inside, they are really tall and the heat goes up plus the way and the materials. Thick rock us way better than the modern stuff
  • Good stuff. Happy Father's day David and All the dad's out there See ya All Thursday 😊

It was 94 but felt like 103 and humid. Came home from work and a swarm was already moved into my trap I built that was in a semi shaded area. This was my first swarm caught and my first bees. Moved them into my hive and marked the queen 2 days ago. Now I'm officially a beekeeper and looking forward to the learning journey

Nice tips. Although not cost efficient for big producers, these 5 things can all be easily accomplished when using Long Lang or Top Bar Hives. I made mine tight enough that between the beetle buster traps and Guardian entrances have virtually no SHB ingress so they can live in the shade now. Peaked roofs and vented top boards means that ventilation can be assisted. I might even start spacing the roof tiles an inch off of the roof to give them more of a home style though external venting action. A top mounted round honey feeder can provide water over the brood nest.

I’m in Texas where it’s very hot and I’ve drilled 2” holes in the cover boards on my horizontal hives and put screen over the holes. The bees on every hive block the scenes with propolis. They don’t want the venting.

Thanks, very helpful. I was just doing some research on this subject.

Great tips David we appreciate it. Happy Father's Day to you!!!

Thank you David for the time to share this important information for us Beek Squad

Dave, Great topic for the current weather. So many different ways to successfully keep bees. I'd like to see you address those of us who choose not to upper vent. For reference: This past year we saw Wind Chills of -30F & Heat Indexes of 111F. Over Wintered 100% (multiple Winters) & never any heat related bearding. My setups - Screen bottom, Slatted rack, full sun (90% of day), a layer of that silver bubble insulation inside every lid. Unless feeding, I also seal the hole in the inner covers. Thanks again, for all your informative videos.

Thank you so much for the useful information.

You're the best!!! Thank you so so much for talking about this!! I've been worried all weekend, starting tomorrow it's supposed to be VERY hot in Ohio this week and I'm so worried about my bees!
  • @KateInTheCity
I am lucky to live in the NE US so it's cooler here than most places but it will still be in the 90s all this week. I actually do have my bees just inside the edge of a forest and I don't have problems with small hive beetle- I've only ever seen one in the last few years. Sometimes I just take a 1" long stick and prop the top open slightly. David is right, it helps so much. I run double deeps so I also have a hole in the top brood box which helps.
