Former FBI agent and body language expert Joe Navarro sits down with WIRED to talk about the non-verbal language of appearance. The ornate nature of how we attend to our bodies has grand significance throughout humankind. The way we present ourselves, across cultures, continues to be of massive importance. But, just how important is appearance to things like success, money and power?

As a high school teacher it amazes me how attractive students get treated better. Even the teachers give them more attention. Unfortunately, some of them have terrible attitudes they think they can get away with. Often they do

My new fav quote- “Please stop worrying about what you look like as a result of how you were born. Let’s take what we have, and let’s see what we can do.”

Let's summarise:- 1)look good naturally if not , dress well and do makeup to change what you can leave what you can't (or shadow it) 2) be wired to stand out , be different if you can 3) be consistent build a image around yourself that says he is always powerful

When you thought you weren't much to look at because of societal beauty standards but then discovered that even babies could potentially ugly shame you :')

It helps to be tall and attractive.
  • I will watch every Joe Narvarro video as soon as it hits my radar. Wired needs to give him a full staff role if he's interested. He needs a weekly show packed with tips. The information he provides is priceless.

It's kind of fascinating that even across all these cultures, all these different types of people in the past that haven't met or interacted with anyone outside their group, somehow all deviated to the same, super specific aspect, like having something big and tall on your head as a symbol of power. It's pretty amazing if you think about it.

I have noticed people behave differently when they are dressed professionally. If you’re in a position to observe several meetings, observe people dressed casually (usually a Casual Friday) vs. a regular business day. The same individuals usually behave differently.
  • I'd like to see a video on how extraversion/introversion affects success.

One more thing that was overlooked is the way a person speaks. The tone and speed of your speech will greatly affect how people perceive you.

I adore Joe's videos! He explains modestly, with proof, and logical explanations, if something doesn't know or is not sure about — he admits it. A great expert!
  • I love this man. Can @WIRED post more videos of him? They are really educating. Joe Navarro could be an amazing lecturer.

Don't forget many, MANY narcissists/sociopaths are dressed beautifully/handsomely. Never judge a book by it's cover. Judge by character!
  • I always look forward to Mr.Navarros videos 👍 I hope to see him more often in wired

  • Thank you for sharing. I will consider your suggesting into my life.
  • When I taught 7th and 8th grade we sometimes had dress up days. It was amazing how much overall behavior improved on those days.

In real life it's just like he said, when you dress up, people treat you better, and I don't mean expensive designer clothes, but just looking neat and put together. Anyway it's surprising that in USA majority of ppl don't think much about their appearance and wear just whatever while in Europe ppl put a lot of effort to look good.
